She asked about the cows wade , Sam and Captain Jack had taken . Wade told the story of the prairie crossing with the Comanche trouble and she sat listening shaking her head . Wade said ...Ed Staley bought the cows and we didn't have to drive them to Fort Graham plus we got more for them ! I put the money in the ranch account , that's why I bought us some extra things like Zeke's new shotgun . He gave her all the paperwork and said ...The land to the ford is paid for and witnessed by Captain Jack , also the partnership and combining of my land up north . He got up and went to the supplies and brought back two boxes and pulled two new real oil lamps from them . He said these are for you ! The lamp Hosea made has served us well and will be saved but these are much better for light .
He told of his dealings with Ed and staying with them and that they were invited to stay any time . He told of the windmills and Granny Ruth and her café . He told her Captain Jack would see Sam home safe . He told of meeting Lucy and marrying Faye and her husband . He told of the trip back and finding water that would make the crossing much easier .

I still miss Captain Jack and Sam but you helped them through the most dangerous part of their journey home . You chose well on the supplies and hiring the Garcia's and GOD sent us Rosa and Lucy . Ed had showed the two young Rangers where to bed down in the shed and they started griping about having to sleep in a stock shed . Ed said ...You got a roof over your head ...you should be thankful . She had Lucy ask Wade to come and talk to her . Wade was there really fast wanting to know what the problem was . She said ...There is no problem at all . There is time before supper ...Take them all to the river and let them enjoy the river and let them bathe and rest before supper . The cabin and table were not big enough for everyone to eat inside . Zeke , her , Wade , Ed , Don . Rosa and Nate ate at the table and everyone else sat on the benches outside on the porch talking . They liked the beans and Zeke said the men had caught enough catfish for a good meal tomorrow . Everyone helped themselves to beans and cornbread . Lucy and Rosa would stay in the cabin with her , they had already made their beds on the floor . She was going to miss her few minutes of time talking to Zeke before bed .
Wade announced they would start working on the bunkhouse in the morning . That everyone would have a better place than what could be provided right now . He told them there was much work ahead and they would all work together . It had been a big first day and they were all clean , safe and fed .

Lets let her rest a while longer , she has had a long trip and a big day yesterday . When she got sitting Lucy picked up her brush by the bed and started brushing her hair gently telling her how pretty her hair was . Wade walked over and kicked both in the butt with the toe of his boot hollering ...Get up and do your share ! The Garcia brothers laughed at them walking out to take care of the stock . At getting to the logging place Zeke and Don explained what size and kind of logs were needed . There were already logs on the ground trimmed and Juan and Steve started snaking logs to the shed . Wade showed up in a bit and relieved a man to take a break , they spelled one another off to rest . Much was getting done and Zeke thought ...This is really going to work out ! Wade did good deciding to bring the Garcia's back !

Zeke shut em down at noon . It was hotter than heck and they had worked hard . They took two logs back and a load of trimmings when they went back . Wade had left to make sure lunch was ready . Lucy and her had three big meat pies with potatoes and onions in them with sweet tea . They had made two pecan pies ! It made wade hungry just looking at the food , he bragged on them heavily !
The men came in and washed up . Lucy doled out the meat pie on plates and Rosa served it . She had mixed , stirred , told Lucy how to make the meat pie but wanted to work harder so bad . Rosa ate with her father and uncles , She made everyone happy to be around her . She announced they would have all the fried catfish you could eat for supper with fried potatoes and onions with cornbread .
Juan said ..Senoras you make us fat ! We are not use to eating so good ! Bless you all that take care of us so well ! Everyone shook their head and agreed . Lucy was happy as a pig in the sunshine . Spirits were still high with everyone seeing the progress they had made . Many logs waited to be snaked to the shed . She had mentioned to Wade and Zeke they could have one man set limb lines from the willows by the river when they were logging to catch fish with little extra trouble since they were there anyway . Wade and Don would show the ones how to do it that didn't know , Zeke would keep two men felling and hauling logs . The livestock shed had to be made bigger , they had many more horses now . They had enough corn but were woefully short on hay for the winter now . The fall garden needed to be planted , watered and tended . Daily chores , putting the stock out , patching and making clothes .

Supper was a great success ! As was promised they had all the catfish they could eat . Wade announced they had brought thirty seven logs in and there were still many on the ground at the river ! They would log two more days and start the bunkhouse , they would have a nice place of their own . He thanked everyone for their hard work and looked at Steve and John . He said you two have surprised me , you have done well and you have shown what you can do . The Garcia's and Zeke agreed .

The logging group walked down river to begin felling , snaking and hauling . Wade started writing in his daily log book of yesterday , Ed started sawing big cedar logs to shake length behind the shed . Lucy , her and Rosa did dishes , started dried meat simmering for dumplings , making butter , washing clothes and cleaning . She had Rosa give her Ed's new pants to sew on and Lucy started hemming the other pair saying ...When I drive the wagon back I must bring my sewing kit ! I don't even have a thimble ! She looked in her kit and pulled out a silver thimble saying ...This was my mother's thimble , it is bigger than mine . Try it and see if it fits Lucy . Lucy slid it on her right forefinger and said ...It's my size , imagine that ! Now I will not poke myself so much .
