.357 Sig
Dear Lord Jesus in Heaven!!!
I stood next to a guy shooting .357sig today. I want one. That makes the biggest book out of a normal lookin handgun I have ever seen... I would literally feel it inside my skull and eyeballs. like a wave. My vision blurred from righgt to left a couple of times then got fixed as the "echo" went away. Is this loudest normal round out there?

No but close - - - A 125 gr .357 Magnum out of a 2" barrel is worse. But, who's keeping score?

357 Sig is a harsh bang but I agree the .357 Magnum has a very distinct cracking sound. My new .41 Magnum loaded up with 20 gr. of Winchester 239
is close.
I remember being at Sportsman's in Humble with my friends and one of them brought his Smith 500..... That is one insane bang at an inside range. When it went off everyone on the line stopped shooting.

Re: .357 Sig
Yeah...What the other guys said. My .357 Sig is loud, but nowhere near as loud as my .357 Magnum, which makes me regret not double-plugging every time I shoot it.BrassMonkey wrote: Is this loudest normal round out there?

"You will not enjoy that bang near as much when you have to buy the ammo"
You won't have to buy much ammo for a 357 SIG. If it shoots right out of the box, one or two mags is probably sufficient to test for failures to feed and eject on account of the necked-down cartridge. Then park it for those Decisive Moments. Keep your old nine around for practice on the cheap.

Squeeze off a couple of full tilt boogie 357's in a confined space (even with muffs on) and you may not think it's the greatest thing in the world!
The 357 SIG does have a very distinct "Crack" vs. i would say a "pop" or "boom" common to other rounds. It seems to permeate my muffs far more than other rounds (including rifle rounds)

I compared .357 Sig and .357 Mag one after the other one day (as well as .40 S&W and 9mm Parabellum). I didn't think the .357 Sig was much different from the .40 S&W in the noise and recoil department, but the Magnum definitely won the barkng contest.
I used .357 Sig 124 gr JHP/XTP "Custom", and .357 Mag 125 gr JHP/XTP, out of my FN Hi Power and my S&W Model 19. The Hi Power (with an EFK Firedragon) barrel is a bit over 4 inches, and the Model 19 had a four inch barrel. The Sig round was faster thru the chronograph; both of them penetrated into wetpack approx the same distance (average 11 inches) and the expanded bullets looked identical.
My dog was (verbally) confined to the porch about 30 yards away while I was shooting. He sat thru the .357 sig (and the .40 and the 9), but when I cranked off the first magnum round, he got up. Second round, he got off the porch. Third round, he went to the other side of the house and stayed there.

Out of curiosity, what were you shooting out of the .40? In my own admittedly unscientific and not particularly rigorous observations, it seems to me that that the hotter 155gr rounds have a far closer signature to the 125gr .357 Sig rounds that I shoot than the 180gr rounds which seem to be significantly tamer.ELB wrote:I compared .357 Sig and .357 Mag one after the other one day (as well as .40 S&W and 9mm Parabellum). That was the goal of the round...So that's good to hear!ELB wrote: I used .357 Sig 124 gr JHP/XTP "Custom", and .357 Mag 125 gr JHP/XTP, out of my FN Hi Power and my S&W Model 19.
