Open carry at gun show?

Next year, when open carry becomes effective, will gun shows that are held in buildings that are owned by a governmental entity be able to prohibit entry of legally licensed open carriers? I'm wondering about unenforceable notice via 30.07 versus the rights of the private entity renting the room.

I never know what to make of the gun shows.

I always see a ton of people check in both handguns and long guns.

I see guys carrying both handguns and long guns all over the shows trying to trade or sell.

I also see guys check in handguns and once they are checked and tie wrapped they put them back in their CC holster or gun case after entering the show. No on says a word.

I always leave my gun in the truck because of the 30.06 sign, but I see people at the tables in the back conducting private sales, handling guns and showing to other people and making deals all the time.

Some guy at the show told me he carries a load mag in his pocket, checks in the unloaded handgun, CC's at the show then when leaving the show but before he exits building he reloads/rearms in the bathroom.

The whole no CC or OC thing is ridiculous anyway , you can buy the gun, ammo and magazines at the show. You carry all this stuff once you buy it at the show. No OC or CC isn't preventing crime.

I can live with a safety check for good preventative AD/ND measure for show goers especially handling guns in the back table for private transactions. It's not like you are at a range with a firing line or there is a safe direction to point in other than up or down but even then you have to muzzle sweep someone to do it. It's a GUN SHOW! People are constantly handling weapons at the show. Just because most are from dealers doesn't mean the dealer can make a mistake and put a loaded weapon out on the table.

I think as long as it is checked in before hand with the tie wrapped, verified as unloaded is the main concern. As long as it has that I think you are good to go. At least that's the practice I've observed.

I do see what seems to me to be a difference between what the law says vs. what I have observed and the whole premise of a gun show in the first place.

Thanks for the response. Sorry that I was not clear, but I was referring to carrying a loaded open firearm, the same way that I currently carry a loaded concealed firearm at gun shows that are held on public property regardless of 30.06 posting.

It should be legal, but there are several cities and gun shows that don't agree. Many of those allow the 30.06 signs to be placed at this time and claim they will enforce them. My advice would be to wait a bit until we get the issue of posting 30.06 signs and threatening to enforce them resolved for gun shows on government owned property. However, if your pockets are deep, then you may be the one to help get it resolved. Now that there will be a penalty for cities improperly posting signs, I think it would be better to report them and get it resolved that way.

Yeah that's the main venue to which I was referring. I'm imaging a post 1/1 scenario where someone open carrying is asked to check their weapon, and they respond that it's their carry weapon, not a weapon for the show. I was wondering how that would play out.

It will be interesting, since the gun show is only up for 2 days, then is gone. I think the businesses on gov't property get like 3 days to take the signs down, but if it is a revolving venue, it should be interesting.

The gun show issue will get resolved in time. Most likely it will take several reports to the AG's office followed by some sort of directive to the municipality providing the venue for the show(s). I doubt the municipalities will get fined per statute because the unenforceable 30.06 signs will come down within the required grace period. But repeat reports concerning the same facility/municipality are likely to attract some unwanted attention from the AG's office.

With regard to the original post, open carrying past 30.07 signs at gun shows won't be as crystal clear. When SB273 was passed, TPC 30.07 didn't exist. So the procedures, penalties, and fines defined in SB273 only refer to TPC 30.06. I would imagine that there will be a catch-up bill offered in the next session.
