I dunno. The orginal story, at least the one in the OP, attributes "shot in the head" and "picked up brass" to "police say".

And it could be that's what the police said. Police could well have assumed shot in the head due to the injury. They might also have said "picked up brass," but it's also possible it went something like.....Reporter: "you didn't find any brass at the scene?" Police: "No." Reporter: "Could the shooter have picked it up? Police: "Yes." Or even, "yes, but he could also have used a revolver"....which then becomes, "the shooter picked up the brass" because the media like to paint any use of a gun in self-defense or in the defense of others as negatively as possible.
