Just got off the phone with the DPS.
I have not yet received any notice so I went looking by calling. According to the lady I talked to she said that they have not made a determination yet about whether or not they will require us to sign up for a class. I reminded her that there is only less than 3 months left in the year and how much longer could they put off making that decision without risking many instructors loosing their currency on 12/31.
She reminded me that she just works there and that my concern was above her pay grade and suggested that I start the online process anyway.
Which I did only to find out that the site has problems and my application could not be completed. I called back and confirmed the site is in fact having problems and to keep trying.
Does anyone else have any useful info on the current state of instructor renewals? I would love to hear. Time is running out.

Re: New update on instructor renewal
I submitted my renewal application and CHL-90 back in August in anticipation of a flood near renewal time. Initially, all I got back was the generic message:
I figured it might be a while before I heard anything one way or the other, but the other day I finally sent a note inquiring about my status. I got the following back:

Take the above for what it's worth...which isn't much until they formally update / send out e-mails to instructors to get the ball rolling. You have completed the initial part of the Instructor Renewal application process and we need no further documentation at this time. Additional instructions regarding the completion of the renewal process will be provided in email at a later date.
* There will be no “In Person” classes or proficiency requirements this year for the instructor renewal.

Re: New update on instructor renewal
DPS will email information about taking the online renewal course to everyone who applies for renewal and submits the CHP-90. We still have 3 months to take an online course, so there's no need to worry folks. We have plenty of time.
