8 round mag tube only holds 7

Post by C-dub »

What am I doing wrong?

I've had the Benelli M2 3-gun model for a couple of years now and have never been able to load 8+1 in it. I did a match yesterday in a little bit of rain, so I took it completely apart again today to clean and lube it. The first time I put it all back together I could only get 2 rounds in. I'm not exactly sure what that problem was, but after a few attempts of reinstalling the mag spring and end plug I finally got it back to being able to load 7 in to the magazine. However, it's supposed to hold 8.

Does anyone else have this model? Will it hold 8+1?

May be a dumb question, but what size shells are you loading 2¾" or 3" ?

2.75" shells. So far, I haven't even looked for any 3" shells, but that was a valid question.

Andy, I guess that's what I have, but the manual that came with mine doesn't say that at all. The front of that one and the contents page look very similar to mine, but the rest is only vaguely similar. Mine is only in English, so what is on page 56 in that pdf is on page 12 in mine. Mine only describes a maximum of 5 rounds, including the one in the chamber. For this reason, I have to be careful with what I take from my manual for my specific gun.

Most websites with reviews of this gun say that is will hold 8+1. I'm not disappointed. I thought it was setup wrong or I was doing something wrong. However, I did visit Nordic's website and may order a longer extension tube if I plan on doing more in 3-gun.

I have the same issue with my 1300 defender. Turns out that even though the shells are 2.75", they are the same length as 3" unfired and I believe shot gun shells are measured after they have been fired. The shells have a different crimp and do not "grow as much" after they are fired as a typical 3" shell. That's why I have 12 pellets of 00 instead of the normal 9 in a 2.75" shell. I will verify if I remember tonight when I get home.

2-3/4" refers to the length of the fired hull. The crimped length of unfired shells vary greatly between manufacturers and even between different loads from the same manufacturer.

As purchased, my Mossberg 930 SPX was supposed to be 7+1, but I could only get 6 rounds of Federal buckshot in the magazine. I purchased a Nordic tube with an XL end cap to replace the Choate tube that came on it, but it still couldn't quite get #7 in all the way. Later, I stumbled on an XXL end cap and that allowed me to finally load 7+1. My tube now sticks out about 1/4" past the muzzle, but that doesn't bother me.

Tell you what C-dub.... I'll trade you that crappy thing straight up for my wife's 20 gauge Yildiz over and under. It holds ALL TWO of the rounds it is supposed to hold....and if you practice with it, you're skeet game will improve. That Benelli is too classy for you anyway.

In the meantime, my Mossberg 590A1 holds only 8+1 (I've checked it) ..... which is what it is supposed to hold ...... and I think it probably cost about a third of what that Benelli cost. "rlol"

I checked just now and my 2.75" 00 is actually slightly longer than my 3" duck shells both unfired. 3.5" is a different story.

Wish we had 3 gun in Central TX. Sounds like fun.

Hmmm, let me think about it a little.

Now, you could get an extra round in if you ghost load it. Requires a little modding on the M2, but it would allow for one more round.
