IMO, 9mm and 40S&W both have a sharp or snappy recoil that hits back at you quickly. The 9mm is not bad because it is weak enough not to be an issue. 45 ACP might have a heavier overall recoil, but I find it to be softer. To me it is the difference between someone hitting you or just giving you a shove. The shove might move you more, but it just moves you.
These days, I am getting away from 40 caliber. I will either go with 9mm or 45.

Re: Poor Sales People
My point in my OP was not to dig into the recoil coefficient and ballistic qualities of the .40.
I sought to highlight that a sales clerk could have had a negative effect on someone interested in shooting, or home
defense.
Rather than a calm no-nonsense approach to a woman inquiring about a pistol, I saw what I perceived to be an ill-prepared (at best)
or passionately un-informed (at worst) sales clerk scare away a lady asking legitimate questions.
She could have been your sister, your aunt, your cousin....interested in the hobby (at best), or worried about defending herself against
a bad guy (at worst) in her life. I saw her leave after the "YOU'LL HATE SHOOTING" speech...so I'll leave the probabilities to you..
Sorry, didn't meant to interrupt your discussions regarding recoil vs. gun heft.
Color my cynical....and somewhat sarcastic.....

Re: Poor Sales People
We were not there, so all we have to go on is your OP about a sales clerk telling a woman he would not recommend a .40 to a woman. This is the part I was agreeing with the clerk about. Did he offer other calibers that she might be more comfortable with? If I was the sales clerk, I would have said, it's your choice, but instead of the .40, I would recommend you start with a ______ or try to rent a .40 at a gun range and see if you like it before buying one.chuckybrown wrote:My point in my OP was not to dig into the recoil coefficient and ballistic qualities of the .40.
