Well it started out pretty rocky to say the least. There were probably 3-4 students and maybe 2-3 teachers that spoke first, that said some extremely ignorant or possibly naive things that I'm not going to get into. Then came our side. Mr. OCT walked up and introduced himself and I started to panic, however he very clearly and thoroughly made his point, and did a great job honestly. Then another guy walked up and put everyone that talked against it on blast and he walked away with a well deserved round of applause. The one thing that really made me want to get up there and speak was a kid that said he speaks for all students at Texas state, and proceeded to explain how he would feel unsafe. When he said that I almost just blurted out NO YOU DONT! But I managed to keep my cool. All in all it was extremely streamlined and organized and I am very impressed with how it was ran. There was probably 50/50 support from each side but I think our point was much more strongly represented with actual facts, whereas the other side just "feels" this and that. I should have stepped up and spoken but I was too worried that I might be a little too harsh to help our cause.

There was at least a few times that I felt personally insulted with some of the rhetoric the same ignorant type of people were saying about CHL holders in the town hall meetings at UNT as well. Glad to hear it was streamlined and well represented.

Thanks, JB2012. I am glad it was fairly balanced. I was going to try to make it. As a fellow student, I am not too disappointed with the proposed rules. They are about what I expected.

The point I wanted most to bring out was that Texas State has a great criminal justice department. Some of the top academics in the country teach and research here. I am curious why the school did not ask that department for a review of any research into this question and no-gun zones. Within the CJ area, I know that we have professors on both sides of the issue (the school even teaches firearms use through the ALERRT center) so I think a fairly honest review could have been produced.

I actually never thought about consulting with the CJ dept. but that is a good idea. Did you make it out to the 2nd hearing?

I know nothing of the integrity no political proclivities of TSU, but as a long time participant in various bureaucratic processes, I know that if you want a committee to come to certain conclusions, you are very careful as to who you put on the committee, what questions you allow them to address and ask, and who they can consult for answers.
