Abilene Police to Host Open Carry Forum

ABILENE, TX – On January 1, 2016, the open carry of handguns will become legal in the State of Texas. The Abilene Police Department has fielded many questions regarding the new law. There are many rumors about the law and misinformation has been circulated through social media.

On December 10, 2015, at 6:00 pm, the Abilene Police Department will host an Open Carry Forum in the second floor conference room at the Law Enforcement Center. The forum is intended to address several issues surrounding the law such as:

• What does the law actually say and what changes will take effect on January 1, 2016?
• What are my rights as a citizen to carry a handgun and where can I carry?
• How will Abilene Officers interact with citizens who elect to carry open or concealed weapons?
• Is a license required to carry a handgun?
• How must I carry a handgun?
• What are my rights as a business or property owner to restrict the carrying of firearms?
• What does the law require regarding prohibitive signage?
• Can a person carrying a firearm on my property be arrested?
• Can a person carrying a handgun on public property be arrested?

This event is intended to be an informative session between the Abilene Police Department and members of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, hospitals, interested business owners, property owners, and citizens. Please join us at the Abilene/Taylor County Law Enforcement Center at 450 Pecan Street in Abilene on December 10, 2015, at 6:00pm.
