Private firearm sale - how to do a background check?

Post by eldergod0515 »

I've got a brand new hunting shotgun I won in a raffle and want to part with. There's a local buyer (via a FaceBook group) and we've agreed on a price.

How do I know he's not a bad guy? He doesn't have a CHL, and I can't figure out a way for a non-FFL (me) to get a background check. Morally, I don't think I can sell to a stranger that could hurt somebody.

I'm in Plano (Dallas), he's in Fort Worth.

Any help is appreciated.

Find a FFL Dealer nearby that will allow you to bring it in and let your buyer have it transferred to him by the dealer. The Dealer will run the background check.
http://www.GeeksFirearms.com NFA dealer.
$25 Transfers in the Sugar Land, Richmond/Rosenburg areas, every 25th transfer I process is free

Active Military, Veterans, Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS receive $15 transfers.

Wouldn't he have to sell it to the dealer first if he wanted them to background check the other guy?

No. The dealer temporarily takes possession of it while it goes in and out of his bound book, but the dealer doesn't have to own it.

Most just have the buyer sign a bill of sale.

Most people on this forum require the production of a CHL to sell a weapon to someone. Failing that, you'd have to go through an FFL as described by others.

Garland and Arlington Police both have exchange zones you might want to arrange a meeting there me personally I would not sell to somebody on Facebook either here in the forum or Gunbroker and use an FFL

Here is a common bill of sale PDF form that the Utah Gun Exchange provides for private sellers. Where it says "CWL", that would be your CHL/LTC: http://utahgunexchange.com/doc/billofsale.pdf. You can fill out the PDF and print it out for signature. I'm actually going to download a copy of this for myself.
