SMU beefs up security after shooting threat 10:55 AM CT

SMU beefed up security on Monday as a precaution after a threat to â€œshoot upâ€? the school was discovered scrawled on a classroom chair.

The threat was discovered in a Hyer Hall classroom on April 23. The message said the incident would occur â€œ8-6-07,â€? which officials interpreted as June 8 or Aug. 6.

The threat is considered â€œlow,â€? said Kent Best, a university spokesman. Various meetings were being held on campus this week, but the schoolâ€™s fall semester begins Aug. 23.

The university was asking visitors and personnel on campus to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police at 214-768-3333 or call 911.
