Looking to become an instructor

Post by GHORN »

Hello all,
I'm looking to become an LTC instructor but don't currently have my LTC. Looks like you can get both at the same time, but the gentleman I spoke with in Austin said he did not recommend going that way. Said it would take longer? Does this make sense to you guys?

So does this mean I go take the LTC class here locally and then try to get signed up for the instructor school? Sorry but I'm confused.

The representative also said I need a CHL -90 and NRA docs/pistol class.

Isn't that what you get when you take the class?

Thanks for your feedback and hello! Sure I will spending way too much time in here :cheers2:

Welcome to the forum.

Unless you are already a certified handgun instructor for law enforcement or some other approved course, you must be an NRA certified instructor before you can take the DPS course.

As for slower, what they are probably meaning is that it will take quite a while before you will get into an instructor class, even if you are already an NRA instructor, so you would get your LTC quicker by taking a class from an instructor. Waiting times to get into the instructors class is anywhere from 6-12 months at times.

Hey thanks Keith! So now that I've applied online and done the fingerprints, it sounds like I need to go become certified by the NRA as a handgun instructor. What can you tell me about that process? Any specific course I need to look for when I enroll?

Also, if I'm okay with waiting for the next instructor class to receive my LTC, would I still need to submit my CHL-90? I'm wanting to make sure they aren't waiting on me for anything. :thumbs2:

Yes, you must be a NRA pistol instructor. Here is a link with Texas classes http://www.nrainstructors.org/SearchRes ... th=&women=

The CHL-90 is the application to become an instructor. You will need to be an NRA Instructor before you can submit the CHL-90. Once you can submit the CHL-90 application the wait will start for you to be scheduled into the next available slot for the instructor course.
