Florida again

Post by Rpenn57 »

TALLAHASSEE --
Florida homeowners can no longer set up backyard gun ranges after Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill into law Wednesday outlawing them.

The bill was brought to light, in part, because of a St. Petersburg man's decision to build a gun range in his backyard. It turns out there was no law prohibiting it. Joseph Carannante said he built the gun range in his yard to save him time and money. "I haven't even fired a single shot and I'm being threatened with my life," said Carannante. "People swatting my house, I mean, pretty serious stuff."

Shooter's World of Tampa offered Carannante a one year free membership at its commercial gun range.

The bill (SB 130) that Scott signed into law bans the recreational use of firearms on residential property in neighborhoods where there are one or more homes per acre of land. The law does specify that property owners can still fire a weapon to protect themselves or their property.

So basically the law says you have to have more than one acre to build a range. That doesn't seem that outrageous. Can you imagine living in a neighborhood with quarter acre lots and having a live range in the middle of it?

Sounds pretty reasonable to me on the surface as well. I live on an acre and can't imagine firing my weapon on it...

But then again, I lost all my guns in a boating accident.

I was kinda surprised that someone with such small acreage thought that the neighbors wouldn't be a little concerned. I wouldn't want someone that close shooting in my direction.

Did it specify if it was an indoor range in his back yard? Unlikely but I can't think of any reason why anyone would build an outdoor range on a small lot.

:iagree:

Doesn't seem unreasonable at all. I've got a friend who's dad lives just outside city limits in Denton on multiple acres and we have a 25yd outdoor range setup. Always love shooting outdoors for free!

Me, too. I am still looking for that boat captain.
