59 Diner (Houston) - Bad Signage
Last night, wife and I were out with friends when they wanted to grab dinner at 59 Diner in the Upper Kirby neighborhood. As we walked up to the Hostess stand, there is a 30.06 sign posted, but not a 30.07 sign. I was tempted to just tuck in my shirt and open carry. However, my wife gave me that look that says don't cause a problem, we're out with friends. So, I went back to my vehicle and put my gun in the safe.
Has anyone else run into a restaurant that only has 30.06 signs posted?

I'm a bit surprised that this isn't more common. If a business wants to keep all guns out, they can post the 30.06 sign and then just give verbal notice to anyone who is open carrying (a handgun or long gun).
Maybe it's the irrational fear of guns that keeps them from wanting to give verbal notice?

Of course, it is also possible that the business is perfectly OK with OC'd weapons and just considers concealed carry to be a problem. I could see a business thinking that CC is a bit more nefarious than OC, since people are trying to hide the fact that they are carrying a weapon.
Only way to test this is by OC'ing.

I haven't seen or heard of this before, but knew it was possible. I don't consider it "bad signage" (the posting of only one compliant sign) but it is 'curious' signage when we consider that it is now lawful to carry either concealed or openly (if not prohibited).OneGun wrote:Last night, wife and I were out with friends when they wanted to grab dinner at 59 Diner in the Upper Kirby neighborhood. I can't help but think that a misunderstanding of what is required (or not) is at play on their part.
I suppose the first thing to notice is whether or not the 30.06 sign is the 'current' version. If it is and it is the only (compliant) sign posted, it rather suggests that Open Carry is the only thing allowed, though upon entry you might find that was NOT the intention of the establishment.
Given that uncertainty and considering you were with friends out for dinner, you did the correct thing.... without question.

Perhaps a phone call or thoughtful letter to management would clear things up. Some businesses simply don't know any better or might have been given bad information. This is where we can make a difference.
IF they post one or both signs after that (as is their right) then at least we know where they stand can appeal to them afterward. But as you have experienced....the LACK of signage (a clear intent) had the potential to cause you (and them) some amount of awkwardness.
You did well in handling it the way you did. You now have an opportunity to be an ambassador for all us and follow up on it.

I have seen JUST the 30.06 sign posted (without a 30.07 sign), but in a unique situation >>>
I went to a few nursing homes in the last couple weeks, have seen about 25 signs of many variations.
So,
Just curious if that restaurant sign was a
NEW language sign, outdated pre-January 2016 sign or WAY outdated like the 4413 29 (ee) 30.06 sign?

Easiest 'tell' on old vs new signs... does the sign say "concealed handgun law" (old) or "handgun licensing law" (new).NotRPB wrote:I have seen JUST the 30.06 sign posted (without a 30.07 sign), but in a unique situation >>>

If I did not want open carry in my business I would make the sign like Taco Cabana, only shorter:
"Open carriers will be asked to conceal"
Gun phobic businesses with both a 30.06 and a 30.07 could save some space and junk the 07 with a sticker to add to their 30.06: "Open carriers will be asked to leave". I don't see the practical logical need for a 30.07 on any business. What they gonna do ? Call the cops and panic if they see OC ?

UPDATE: 59 Diner (Houston) - Bad Signage
So, I was going to call the 59 Diner to talk to a manager. However, it appears that I am too late. All of the 59 Diner locations are closed as of today! See this link: http://www.chron.com/entertainment/rest ... 863178.php

Too bad. It seemed like it might be a good place to eat. I guess I'll never know.

Mrs. Anygun and I have been there a few times in the past just for convenience sake. Food was average. Nothing to make it stand out.

I don't usually stay out late, but when I do there are very few places open.anygunanywhere wrote:Mrs. Anygun and I have been there a few times in the past just for convenience sake. Food was average. Nothing to make it stand out.
I just hate to see the family owned/ independent restaurants fade away.
Then all we have left are the poor to mediocre food served at the chain stores.
