One Sign at a Time

Post by miljet »

Most all of the convenience stores in Texas City posted both 30.06 and 30.07 signs the first week of January. All of the signs were identical and looked like they came from the same sign company. I figured that someone was telling the stores that they needed to display both signs to be legal.

So I typed up a short, generic letter explaining the difference in the signs and printed off a stack. My daughter doesn't have her LTC yet, so she made it her mission to deliver one of those letters to every business in Galveston county that had both signs posted. She didn't just drop off the letters and leave. She waited around until they had read the letter and answered any questions they might have.

She also kept watch and if she saw a sign come down, she would stop in, make a small token purchase, and thank them for removing the sign.

So far, we have seen two 30.06 signs come down and three businesses have removed both signs. The latest to remove both signs was the Stripes station and convenience store on FM 1765. My daughter had a chance to chat with the manager of that store this morning. The store manager admitted that when she posted the signs, she had no idea what they were for but had been told by the sign company that she needed to post both signs to be in compliance with the law. The manager also told my daughter that during an area manager's meeting last week, she had forwarded the letter that I wrote to the corporate office, so it might have some effect on other stores not in the local area.

Below is a copy of the letter I used. Feel free to use it, modify it, or whatever.

It seems that some business owners have been given erroneous information about signs required to prevent open carry of handguns in their place of business. They think that they need to post both a 30.06 sign and a 30.07 sign to prohibit open carry. That simply is not true. The 30.07 sign pertains to open carry and is the only sign needed to prohibit open carry.

The 30.06 sign is strictly for concealed carry. The licensed carry of concealed handguns has been legal in Texas for over 20 years. Many of your customers have been carrying concealed handguns in your store in the past. If you saw no need to post a 30.06 sign before, then why now? Nothing has changed concerning concealed carry.

I understand and completely support your decision to not allow open carry of handguns in your place of business. Again, all you need to post is the 30.07 sign to prevent open carry. The only thing you accomplish by also posting a 30.06 sign is to drive away some of your best customers since they will choose to simply shop elsewhere.

Handgun License holders have submitted to background checks, fingerprint collection, and training from State certified instructors on a variety of topics including firearm safety, use of force laws, verbal intervention and de-escalation, and storage and handling of firearms. We must also pass a live-fire range to demonstrate our proficiency with our chosen firearm. Many license holders are current or former members of law enforcement or the military, like myself. Handgun License holders are safe, legal, knowledgeable, and proficient.

Thank you for taking time to read this. Have a nice day.

First off, thank you for taking the time and effort to do this.

I might suggest a slight revision to the part that I bolded, however, unless you really intend to say that you are anti-OC. "Understanding" a decision is fine, but I would never "completely support" a decision to restrict any type of carry.

:iagree: with the text in blue.
