I just sent back a 512 and 552 for full refund of my purchase price + $15 each for shipping.

They say it could take 8-12 weeks for refund. About 8 weeks is what's been reported on the interwebs.

Last month, L-3 Communications was sued by the US Government in Federal Court for fraud regarding performance of their line of EOTech Holographic Weapon Sights. The same day, L-3 settled with the US Government for $25.6 Million. This suit comes on the heels of a USSOCOM Safety Of Use Message for the sights because of Point of Impact shifts in extreme temperatures as well as other performance issues.

Oh ok - I heard about that, extreme temperatures doesn't seem to be a problem I'd expect to experience. I thought maybe something else had come to light.

The link to the USSOCOM safety of use message also states that they are not parallax free as originally advertised. That, plus a shift in zero induced by temperature, means you have a a greater chance of missing your target. Temperature extremes are probably more likely then you might first imagine though. Although you will probably never be patrolling in extreme temperatures, the rifle and optic may be exposed to them. If you ever need to make a stop on your drive home from shooting, especially during the summer, the temperature in your car will easily reach extreme heat.

Ahh I had not read the part about parallax free - must have overlooked that(I'll admit I just glanced at the article because it looked like one I had already read) I thought I had read the drift due to extreme temperatures would correct itself/realign back to original settings once the temperature changes dissipated, so given your example of having it in your trunk or car during the summer, it would reach those temperatures but not during use, so the drift wouldn't be noticeable/seen during use. I'm not trying to argue or debate how good they are, just trying to ask questions because I had been thinking about getting one. Would like to have all the relevant information before dropping that kind of money.

It might return to zero, but I do not want to rely on what it might do. I want certainty. You can also run my scenario in reverse and that would mean after arriving at your shooting location you would have to wait for it to return to zero, assuming it will.

For most applications it will probably work just fine. With that said, they are expensive, but I was willing to spend the money because of advertised performance. They have since changed their owner manuals to reflect performance issues, but they have not changed their pricing.

I plan to get an ACOG once my refund arrives.

Dang, I'd send mine in if I could find my receipt. Bought years ago never used it much because it doesn't quite agree with my astigmatism , got an aim point and saw much better with it

Cool! I saw it asks for refund amount, no idea what I paid got my xps2 when they came out...maybe I'll find an email somewhere otherwise I'll go with what current price is

I think people are underestimating the effect the of temperature problem. I go to the range on a nice spring day and sight in my EOTech. I return in the summer and set the rifle down on a bench in the sun for 5 minutes while I'm getting ready, voila, POI has potentially moved 4".

I suspect all optics are affected to some degree but wondering which side of a 8" target to aim at so I can hit it at 100 yrds doesn't seem acceptable to me. I replaced one of them with an Aimpoint PRO and am thinking about a Vortex Strike Eagle for the other. I can't afford to outfit everything with ACOG's.
