Is this choke fixed or removable?

Post by Dannit »

Hey All,

Purchased a used 28" barrel for my Mossberg 500 to take clay shooting. Was listed as a fixed modified choke but looks strange to me. Hoping y'all could help answer a couple questions-

1) is this a fixed choke? The fact that I can see two distinct rings, a lip, and a seam about 2" down the barrel makes me think it is removable. The barrel is stamped "12 GA MODIFIED CHOKE MADE IN USA" and doesn't specify fixed or accu-choke.

2) is the flattened/creased part of the lip a problem? You can see it almost opposite the rail, towards the top in one picture and bottom of the other.

TIA

That looks like,a removable choke but it looks like there is a flat spot at the end of the barrel. Have you tried to remove it with a choke tool? The slots at the end look like they would fit a tool. That flat/bent spot may cause issues though. Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks for the reply. Your comments agree with what I was thinking. I'm also concerned about the flat spot and unfortunately I do not have a choke tool to try and remove it with.

I will try a local gunshop next week to see if they can help.

The barrel definitely has an interchangeable choke tube in it, but it appears to me some portion of the muzzle and rib have been cut or ground off a little with the tube installed. The end of the rib and muzzle are shiny, not blued which they should be. The bottom of the muzzle has also been bent (see the flat spot) and encroaches on the choke tube which would make it difficult to unscrew. Whoever did it probably called it a fixed choke knowing it would be difficult to remove the tube. IMHO The ding could be straightened out with a rounded piece of wood or very hard plastic, Just be careful not to use any thing that would damage the threads. Walmart sells universal choke tube wrenches. I'm not sure this is a Mossberg tube, I think they have two slots, but I sold my Mossberg so I can't say for sure.

It's hard to see in the pictures but the choke is actually recessed from the lip.

Where did you purchase the barrel? You may just want to return it and start over. BTW What is the barrel length and how far is the tube recessed past the muzzle?

I probably will return it.

The barrel is supposed to be 28" but I haven't measured the actual barrel length yet.

The recess is about 1mm.

4 notches on a Mossberg choke is an Improved Cylinder, which is the tightest choke I would ever use for skeet.

So this is actually an improved cylinder choke?

It's supposed to be just modified choke.

Keith, I noticed the threads on this barrel extend right to the muzzle. You can see them in one of the notches. I don't have my Mossy anymore but all my Win chokes and Rem chokes are threaded at the rear of the tubes. I just Googled some Mossberg 500 Accu chokes and they appear to have threads at the rear as well. Do you have a Mossberg? OP didn't specify it was a Mossberg 500, maybe it's a 835 or 935. Are the Mossy 835/935 chokes different. :headscratch I wouldn't think so.

EDITED:
I just re-read the OP and now it makes sense. This barrel has been modified for interchangeable tubes and has been buggered up.
To the OP: the only way to know what choke you have would be to measure the ID.

See my last post. It's been altered to use removable choke tubes.

Thanks for all the info. I will try to measure the length and ID to check the choke type.

Already submitted a request to return. This was purchased off eBay.
