Whoops on Expiration Date

Post by Dart106A »

Had a "whoops" back in March when my CHL expired. In my head for some reason, and not on my actual license, I had the last day of my birth month as being the expiration date. At work a co-worker had just gone through his first class, and I mentioned I needed to renew mine that month. He asked to see what the actual license looks like, so I showed him, and realized my actual expiration was on my birthday, which was about a couple weeks prior!

Whoops!

I called the RSD, explained the situation, and they were very nice. Took care of it on-line when I got home from work, and got my new license in the mail today.

Just a reminder if anyone else may think the same thing I did, and did not really read your renewal notice that closely!

BTW, I thought it was interesting that they put the word "Veteran" in red on my new LTC. I was on active duty when I got my original, and have since retired. Does anyone know why it they put that designation on the LTC?

When you apply and qualify for the veteran's discount, they put that on your license. It's been that way for two or three years now.

Okay, but for what purpose does that designation serve to an LEO if you have to present your card? (I don't need him/her to thank me for my service; though it is always a nice gesture.) Certainly the DPS knows you are a veteran as you had to prove it to get the discount.

Why put it on the LTC?

I think it's just an honorific, same as having it on your DL or license plate.

As ELB says, it's mostly honorific. For retirees like you and me, it doesn't mean much because we always have our retired ID card. For other veterans, it turns their LTC or DL into a card they can show at places like Lowes or Home Depot to get their 10% veterans discount.

Not exactly sure I would want to use my CHL as proof just to get a veterans discount!

Me either, but the point is... you could. I'm sure some see that as a plus.

The also put Veteran on drivers license now, which is more convenient for most veterans. Going to places on Veterans day that offer discounts or free food generally require proof of service. I always have my license on me, I never carry a DD-214 - problem solved.

Think about using your Driver's License instead - I don't carry around the various DD-214's I have, but my license goes everywhere with me.

I see your point guys, but just the same, I only plan on showing my LTC to folks who need to know. I realize not every veteran is retired from the military as I am, but my DD Form 2 (Retired ID Card) works for me!

BTW N5WD, I'm also an Amateur Extra ham! Don't have you in my log yet, however!

As a side note, I do have the "veteran" designation on my DL but DPS did not put it on the CHL, despite using my DD-214 to get the reduced rate. Maybe on my renewal I'll specifically request it.
