Question on discharge. . ..

Post by ReubenT »

Hello. I have a quick question. I was recently discharged from the Army under medical conditions but its listed as uncharacterized because I wasn't in the military for more than 6 months. Would this disqualify me from obtaining a CHL? Please be honest with answers. Thank you. ;-)

No it won't. Only a dishonorable (felony conviction at court martial) would prohibit you permanently. You probably can't get the veteran discount. But there's no reason why you can't get a LTC.
4/13/1996 Completed CHL Class, 4/16/1996 Fingerprints, Affidavits, and Application Mailed, 10/4/1996 Received CHL, renewed 1998, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2016...). "ATF... Uhhh...heh...heh....Alcohol, tobacco, and GUNS!! Cool!!!!"

Thanks for the clarification on that Scott! I was curious about how all that works. The discount isn't what worried me since I wasn't in service for that long but appreciate the reply!

Petition the VA to have it reclassified to Medical or Honorable. Don't wait too long. After 3 years you're likely to be stuck with it.

ReubenT,

I want to once again reiterate that you should inquire with the VA about getting your discharge reclassified soon. Believe it or not this can hurt you in the job market. As a supervisor that makes hiring decisions, I will shuffle anything other than a Medical or Honorable discharge to the rear of my stack. With so many applicants, I just don't have time to call them in for interviews to see why it's not either of those two types of discharges.

You have 3 years from ETS to request a change in discharge classification before you may be stuck with it. See link below for the best "grunt proof" information on this I've been able to find. Good Luck!
