.380ACP...JHP or FMJ?

Post by hoytinak »

For those of you that carry a .380 do you carry JHP or FMJ and why? I've heard agruements for carrying either or and trying to get a better idea of both. My main CCW is a P7 PSP but thinking bout getting a smaller .380 for pocket carry. Thanks for your input.

There you have it! 100% for JHP.

I have read opinions that some prefer FMJ for penetration through heavy clothes.

I really don't believe it will make much difference. Some .380s are finicky with certain types of JHP so whatever you buy you will certainly have to establish reliability.

why did you leave out alternating rounds?

If you study .380 ballistics and expansions, particularly through heavy winter clothing, you may find that there are in fact occassions when even the best jhp's may lose some penetration effectiveness and still not expand sufficiently.

Just my opinions from prior study.

I don't shoot .380, so I may be speaking out of turn, but I have thought about it a good deal for the same reason you're considering it. I carry Gold Dots in every other caliber, so I might in .380 as well, but I really feel like I'd be more comfortable with DPX in that caliber. I wouldn't consider FMJ acceptable for SD purposes under any conditions.

I keep hollow points (Winchester Rangers) in both of our Bersas now.
I figured that tiny little bullet needs all the help it can get.

It's an interesting caliber, I never had a problem with it, and it should get all the help it can to do what you really need it for...

The best .380JHP's on the market usually score between 10-12" of penetration in gel. Until I see one that can consistently do 12-15", I'm sticking to FMJ.
