Close by, but I don't keep a round in the chamber when I go to bed in a hotel room.

Inside my shoe, on the floor next to my side of the bed. With my flashlight and cell phone.

It is either on my body or easily within reach during waking hours. Asleep it goes on the nightstand. That said, I really like hotels that provide an in-room safe because due to my employment I frequently have to travel and am restricted from taking by firearm to the work site even leaving it in the vehicle (military installations). Thus I am forced to leave it as well as my .mil computer in the in-room safe. Just wish more hotels offered them.
