Ruger LCP On Sale

Post by thatguyoverthere »

Ruger LCP .380 Auto on sale at Gander Mountain for $199.99 if anyone is interested.

http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/p ... &from=grid

I've been thinking about getting a little .380 for a BUG, but didn't really want to spend too much money for one. Think I'll be making a trip to GM tomorrow.

Heck, for that price, I may get one for each pocket! :anamatedbanana

My mother has one of those and I tried shooting it back in June when we all went to the range. I had 2 complaints with it.

1) It was too thin for my big hands.
2) The trigger had to travel ALOT in order to fire.

If you haven't tried one out before, I would encourage you to do so before making the purchase. What was an issue for me may not be an issue for you. :tiphat:

I will second the caution. While I think that this little pistol gave me an amazing tour of service at a time when I couldn't readily part with the cash to upgrade, it is easily my least favorite firearm/pistol. Mine functions fine. Flawlessly even.
But two things to note:
  • 1) the signts are almost non-existent and
    2) the trigger guard hits my trigger finger after every shot.
edit: If it filled a niche for you (small 380, as you say) it will be hard for you to find that good a quality for that little money. Not wanting to trash the pistol. Just cautionary tale. Mine hurts to shoot.

Every now and then, the Ruger LCP Custom goes on sale in the $219 range.

Some people prefer the upgrades on the Custom version, and depending upon your needs, you may want to wait to catch the LCP Custom on sale for ~$20 more than the standard version.

I bought one when they first came out (paid $300 for it). Spend some time working with it and you will be very pleased with the pistol. I spent time dry firing and placing my finger on the trigger in different places until I found where I could put it and get a brisk smooth pull that kept the sights on track. They are not 'Bullseye" pistols but are very accurate at ten yards with a little practice. I have not seen the new, improved model so I can't comment on that one.

A drill I learned from a training class on bugs. Set up an IDPA target (or something similar) at 10 yards. Start with the pistol in a holster in your front pocket and your hand on the pistol. At the buzzer, draw and fire one shot in 3 seconds. Do this ten times until. Goal is to keep all shots inside the 0 down circle. With a little practice, you can do this.

:iagree: definitely not a bulls eye gun, but I still have mine. Also it does have a little kick.

Thanks for the replies, folks.

No, I have never shot one. However, my daughter-in-law owns an LC9 (which she does not like, BTW) that I have shot on several occasions. I'm guessing the LCP would be sort of similar, only in a smaller package (long, heavy trigger pull; very short sight radius [if you can even call it that], maybe a little stiff to rack the slide, no place for my pinkie to go, etc.). I'm aware of those things, but they wouldn't necessarily be a show stopper for me, not for a BUG, that is. And personally, I like Rugers. I like her LC9. It is a little snappy, but you gotta expect that from a package that is that small and lightweight.

BUT, shortly after my post last night, even before I went to bed, I was sort of reconsidering buying the LCP already.

I'm getting on up there in age, and starting to try to turn loose of a little of the money that I've worked so hard to save over all my working life. That's a big change in attitude, so it's coming slowly.

My EDC is a compact 1911, so I'm thinking now that I may like to get something that operates a little more like that for a BUG, just for consistency of operation in a real life situation (external safety, single action, etc.).

Already started looking on-line at Colt Mustang and Sig P238.

We'll see how it plays out.

I have both the P238 and it's big brother the P938. They both shoot like a dream. I carry them each in a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster.

By no means would I encourage you to go hog wild, but it is always cool to hear someone say, "I tried to play it smart earlier on and now I have the liberty to play it a bit looser." Good on ya.

I have been able to shoot the 238 mentioned, on multiple occasions. They are a skosh heavier than the LCP, but they do shoot like a dream.

I have shot the original LCP, and I own the LCP Custom. I would strongly recommend checking the Custom out before going with the vanilla version. I like the trigger a lot better on the Custom, and it has real sights instead of the tiny ridges that pass for sights on the regular one. I was worried they might catch or snag getting it out of my pocket, but that has not been the case. As mentioned, it is not going to be the most accurate gun you own, but I can get satisfactory results with it out to about 10 yards, and I'm by no means the world's best shot. I bought it for a BUG or for when I need deep concealment, and I've been very happy with it so far. I was able to find mine for $250. Hope this helps.

And for about $8 shipped you can get pierce replacement baseplates that let you get your pinky on the grip. Getting the pinky on there really improves control of the little thing...lol
