Application Question- Residential History
Hey Yal,
This is my first post as am still in the process of getting my LTC. I am filling out the application and I am on the Residential History portion and I am kind of stuck. I was deployed for a year with the Army and I'm not sure how DPS wants this entered into the application? I tried calling the helpline and using their email help form but they were both kind of a joke and didn't work. I also tried searching in the forum but nothing showed up. Any suggestions?

Re: Application Question- Residential History
I would go with the best information possible, I would give something like the address for the base you were deployed to/out of unless you had an address off base that you can list.

Easy & simple: strictly put whatever address was printed on your Driver's license at any given time.
Re: Application Question- Residential History
That will probably suffice, but they are really looking for the state, county and city you were actually residing in so they can run a background check with that state/county. Your DL will probably have the address for your Home of Record, which may not have changed while you were in service.infoman wrote:Easy & simple: strictly put whatever address was printed on your Driver's license at any given time.
I would put down your base address and base name for the time you were there. If you deployment was overseas, then still list your stateside base name and address where you were stationed that you left and returned to.
The main thing is make sure you have no gaps in the dates for the 5 years.

Keith is right. Your duty station is what they're looking for.Keith B wrote:That will probably suffice, but they are really looking for the state, county and city you were actually residing in so they can run a background check with that state/county. APO Address?
Wonder how they do the background checks with Baghdad or Kabul...

4/13/1996 Completed CHL Class, 4/16/1996 Fingerprints, Affidavits, and Application Mailed, 10/4/1996 Received CHL, renewed 1998, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2016...). "ATF... Uhhh...heh...heh....Alcohol, tobacco, and GUNS!! Cool!!!!"
Re: Application Question- Residential History
Since (at least in my day) the APO address was the unit assigned to I would think that would be the address to use.
Funny that in this group this is the first time it's come up.

Re: Application Question- Residential History
I just wanted to come back and follow up with this in case anyone ever searches for the answer. I've waited until I got to the "Print Pending" stage before posting to make sure everything on my background check went through ok. For the time I was deployed in the residential history section I put my home of record and it seemed to work.
Thanks for the replies from everyone.

Re: Application Question- Residential History
Could you please clarify if you were Active Duty, or if you were Guard/Reserve and deployed for the year in question? If you were Active Duty its quite likely that your Home of Record & your actual Duty Station/place of residence were not the same (for example, during my career I maintained my 'Texas Residency' & my Home of Record was here, but other than the initial 3 years in Texas Natl. Guard & 3 years at Ft Hood we were stationed outside of Texas). This would differ you were Guard/Reserve & deployed from home station, & your actual residence was the same as your Home of Record.zmcgooga wrote:I just wanted to come back and follow up with this in case anyone ever searches for the answer. I don't ask this to sharp shoot you, but rather for the same reason you cite in that many people reference this forum when they can't find an answer elsewhere. With the proper context they'll better understand your results. And if Active Duty, I'd definitely urge others to refer to Keith B's post above.
Either way, thanks for your service & congrats on the LTC!

According to the current administration, vetting /background checks from those kinds of places are not a problem.

Re: Application Question- Residential History
There is no reason for this anymore. There is no longer a 6 month residency requirement, and the background check is done with prints through the FBI and is national, maybe even international... So it is not like they have to check with every local jurisdiction that you have ever lived in.
The only thing that the DPS will be able to see is what addresses have ever been listed on your driver license. Report those addresses, include the base/post that you were stationed out of and don't worry about listing APO's or reporting every FOB in durka durka stan.

No problem, I should have thought to put that anyway. I was active duty and was deployed for 9 months. My Home of record was different than my actual residential address( at the time I didn't really have a residential address because my wife moved back home right before we deployed and we didn't get on-post housing until a month before I returned for deployment). Hope that clears it up! I do wish they would have had option to somehow indicate that someone was deployed but that's just me nick-picking.

I don't want to start a debate with you, however I'd ask that you either qualify this as your opinion or cite where it's not a requirement to list your actual residence on the background check questionnaire. Again, lots of people peruse forums for varying reasons.
And to be clear for others, there's also a local records check (I have no insider information from DPS, so no idea if they / FBI conduct this level for LTC applications) that can be done to ensure anything at the state/local level isn't missed. I would agree that not every FOB is needed for the LTC application, unless the DPS specifically asks for it.
