Age requirements for firearm ownership
Can any of you tell me, or provide direction to the statute, what the age requirements are for owning (not carrying) various types of firearms i.e.pistols, rifles, shotguns? My oldest is turning 18 this year and I'm wondering if I can get them something of their own. Thanks, Scott

The left lies about everything. Truth is a liberal value, and truth is a conservative value, but it has never been a left-wing value. People on the left say whatever advances their immediate agenda. Power is their moral lodestar; therefore, truth is always subservient to it. - Dennis Prager

If I'm reading it right, both of those seem to indicate that 18 is a threshold for handgun ownership? Or just possession? Are long guns, or shotguns treated the same? Or differently? Thanks for any additional clarification.

as long as he has no criminal history or mental health history you have no problem giving him a rifle or shotgun at age 18.
I believe that you could give him a handgun as well at age 18, but that he wouldn't be able to purchase one for himself from a dealer or an FFL until he is 21.

He/she can own ANY firearm at the age of 18.
They can buy rifles/shotguns from FFL's at 18, pistols at 21.
Private transfers from person to person is 18 for ANY firearm.

Unless you have the parent's written permission.bubba84 wrote:He/she can own ANY firearm at the age of 18.

Presumably, if you gave a firearm to your under-18 child, you have given yourself permission.(c) It is an affirmative defense to prosecution under Subsection (a)(2) that the transfer was to a minor whose parent or the person having legal custody of the minor had given written permission for the sale or, if the transfer was other than a sale, the parent or person having legal custody had given effective consent. - See more at: http://codes.findlaw.com/tx/penal-code/ ... vvSaR.dpuf

My son bought his first personally purchased firearm when he turned 18 - a Mossberg 500 pump action shotty. But prior to that, I bought a handgun for him to use and have.
