anxiety

Post by dominus »

I'm considering appying for a CHL, my only concern is that 7 years ago I was prescribed Prozac for anxiety. I found the side effects worse than the anxiety and quit taking the stuff shortly thereafter. Is that an automatic "no" from the state? I read where one member was rejected. Have any of the members desclosed the use of meds and been approved? I'd like to know before I waste $140. If you are denied, is there an appeals process, can you get evaluated mentally by someone the state would believe? thanks for the help

Taking antidepressants is not a problem. You don't need to disclose it.

One of our forum members was treated for manic depression and received a CHL. She got a letter from her physician saying that she was competent.

The law is concerned with people who have been committed to a mental hospital or diagnosed with psychosis or dementia. It's too long to quote here.

What seamusTX said.

And Prozac or Sarafem (the same as generic fluoxetine) are prescribed for a lot more conditions than depression. Such as premenstrual disorders, bulimia, OCD, obesity - just to name a few.

So they can not assume mental treatment just cause its a condition used to be treated with that drug.

So do they ask you what meds you're on? I'm not sure I ever had a real diagnosis, I was prescribed a few different meds until I quit. So if they deny you, then you talk to your doctor. I recently started taking Paxil, my doc. thinks I'm a bit of a hypochondriac, is that something I have to disclose, and is it likely to affect my status? thanks again

No. The specific wording is
Indicate any history during the preceding five years, or treatment received by, commitment to, or residence in:
a) a drug or alcohol treatment center ...
b) a psychiatric hospital
You could have been cuckoo crazy seven years ago and not have to report it.
