Reasons as to why this happened: Gang banger, broken family, broke, no education, no job, not willing to work, lazy, stupid, ignorant, or just doesn't care. Probably a combination of some of these. Either way, his life is ruined after this. Probably a repeat offender in the making. At least until employers are mandated by the federal Government to not look at criminal records when deciding to hire a person.
