*facepalm*
Almost sounds like another "on the way out" jab.. Hopefully this gets turned back around within the next month.

What is solvent trap? What does it do? Why do I need it? I trap gun gunk solvent with my left hand....
Do you need a pistol noise suppressor? Machine one yourself. Just do not offer it for sale.

Yep, I always knew these were bad ideas since I'm sure that the number of people making legal suppressors (I.e. Filing proper paperwork) is small. Why risk a felony just to save a $200 tax stamp?Beiruty wrote:What is solvent trap? What does it do? Why do I need it? I trap gun gunk solvent with my left hand....

What a mountain out of a molehill. This isn't a legal problem, what we have here is a failure to creatively communicate with the feds!
SD Tactical should just move to Travis County and hire illegal aliens to sell their solvent trap parts.
Problem solved, nothing to see here, we don' need no steenkin' ATF form.
Not that I think illegal aliens, unicorns, or even cute little trolls with their scrunchly faces should be suppressed. Oh, no, that would be so wrong!
By the way, I've heard stories about John Wayne Walding, the first amputee to graduate from the Special Forces Sniper School. I wonder if that's his picture on SD Tactical's home page, bracing his rifle with his prosthetic.
The price paid for American freedom is terrifying, and those who signed blank checks to make payment inspire awe.

Re: BREAKING: SD Tactical Shut Down For Selling Solvent Trap Parts
So the ATF shut them down for selling individual parts that 'could' be used to make a suppressor ? Or was it some sort of do it yourself kit ? Trying to figure out the legal basis for them going after them ? I mean, I know jackbooted government thugs don't always play by rules or use some really strong mental gymnastics for their case. I guess I'm missing something as it sounds like they were just selling car parts ?

Re: BREAKING: SD Tactical Shut Down For Selling Solvent Trap Parts
I can understand them going after them. Very easy to drill holes in the freeze plugs, put the parts together and you have a full suppressor. Everybody "knows" what the parts are for.Pariah3j wrote:So the ATF shut them down for selling individual parts that 'could' be used to make a suppressor ? Or was it some sort of do it yourself kit ? Another "solvent trap adapter" is a poor mans multi purpose adapter. Adapter screws on to the end of the barrel. Screw oil filter onto adapter. Now you have both a solvent trap and a not bad suppressor. Videos on youtube about them and saw Carl using one on the Walking Dead several seasons ago. One gun show I went to a guy was selling them for about $18.
If you're standing still, you're loosing.

Another illustration of why the whole suppressor-as-NFA items and the gyrations the ATF goes thru to enforce it are nuts.

Right, I get what the 'solvent trap adapter is, which is nothing more then a car part and/or a thread on muzzle adapter. But my point is that it in itself is not an illegal item, and has to be purchased (or it is at least 1 way to do it) to do a Form 1 build it yourself suppressor. How are you suppose to do Form 1s if selling the parts that 'could' be used to build a suppressor are illegal ? And why aren't hardware stores raided like once a month for this very reason ?

Re: BREAKING: SD Tactical Shut Down For Selling Solvent Trap Parts
This sounds a lot like the left wing factions in the ATF, fighting back against the proposed hearing protection act, as well as rumors of them being disbanded. They know that the ATF mantra of keeping "silencers" as prohibited under NFSA, will not last past the first congressional hearing, so they are just flexing their muscles while they can. They can raid any hardware store, auto parts store, or even department stores that sell pressure cookers and claim that they are selling "components" to prohibited devices. JMHO

Re: BREAKING: SD Tactical Shut Down For Selling Solvent Trap Parts
The one thing to keep in mind here is that you are dealing with a government agency. To them the intent or ability is all that matters. As an example, it is my understanding that it takes 5 parts and drilling one hole to turn a semi-auto AK into a full auto. The mere possession of the 5 parts shows "intent". They don't have to be installed in the gun. If you drill the 3rd hole needed as part of the modification that too could be considered "intent". A business selling a "kit" of the parts could get someone in trouble. Selling the individual parts as replacement / repair parts is no big deal.Pariah3j wrote:Right, I get what the 'solvent trap adapter is, which is nothing more then a car part and/or a thread on muzzle adapter. I think the one thing that sunk those folks was them selling "kits". Selling the individual parts might not have been that big of a deal. Then you tell the ATF that you are only selling metal tubes and freeze plugs.

Re: BREAKING: SD Tactical Shut Down For Selling Solvent Trap Parts
Based on gov logic, they should now shut down anyone manufacturing or selling automobile oil filters.
I also believe it doesn't pay to try to call a duck something other than a duck. I have mixed thoughts on this.

Look at section 24, it covers parts under the definition of firearm silencer, hence the reason these are not allowed.Pariah3j wrote:Right, I get what the 'solvent trap adapter is, which is nothing more then a car part and/or a thread on muzzle adapter. Re: BREAKING: SD Tactical Shut Down For Selling Solvent Trap Parts
IANAL but, reading this as a layman, its telling me that the part can't be made or redesigned specifically for a 'silencer' or a part that was intended for only use in such assembly... So parts that 'could be' used such as freezer plugs and/or a metal tube, I wouldn't think would qualify. The terms “firearm silencer” and “firearm muffler” mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.
I have no dog in this fight, just simply stating I don't understand how rulings like this get made considering the language used. I don't have any intention of selling making a silencer myself, I'll probably buy one once/if the hearing protection act passes, but no real want to pay the government a tax for something I think should be a right, not a privilege.

Re: BREAKING: SD Tactical Shut Down For Selling Solvent Trap Parts
As someone with a Form1 stamp in hand that currently doesn't have hardware to go with it, I am certainly disappointed to hear the SD has been shut down. I am sure that I will be able to source the parts I need elsewhere, but it is a shame to see one business shuttered because of a bureaucrat's reading/assessment of "intent" of their clientele.
