Benelli shotgun question

Post by HankB »

I have a legal question about mods to a semi-auto shotgun, specifically a Benelli M1 Super 90.

It used to be sold with both a 4-round extension and a pistol grip; during the dark days of the Clinton AWB, the pistol-grip versions came with 2-round extensions; the word is that the shotgun could have either the 4-round magazine extension or the pistol grip - not both.

AWB is gone, but I've seen a lot of posts referencing 922(r) - with lists of parts - for making "compliant" AKs, FALs, etc., but have never seen anything referencing shotguns.

So . . . is the "only one evil feature" law pertaining to the M1S90 still in effect - or not? :?:

Yes, it is still in effect. You can however get around it by having a certain number of US made parts in your Benelli to make it legal to have both pistol grip and full mag tube or registered your Benelli with the BATF as a class III. I think it's 5 US made parts for the Benelli M4, but not sure about the M1. That problem with that is burden of proof is on you if the BATF catches you with it. Another way around it is to purchased a Benelli M1 that was imported by H&K before 1989. Those are acutally few far in between and demands a premium.

I use a Benneli M1S90 for 3 gun competition.
Yes 922(r) has always been in effect and still is.
Plenty of parts suppliers if you want to go that route. I don't know what you want to do but if you are just looking for increased capacity, I have found that the conventional stock, rather than a pistol grip works better for me. Additionally you can perform a bolt modification to allow the "ghost loading" of an additional round on top of the lifter.

Another mod I am in the process of having done is welding up the "U" notch in the tube end of the shell lifter to stop giving myself the dreaded Bennil Thumb when I try to load quickly.

KinneyLee and Bob, thanks for confirming my suspicions.

I was just satisfying my curiosity. I added the long Benelli magazine extension to my M1S90 a while ago - back in the 20th Century ;-) - and, like you, I found that the standard stock fit me better than the PG stock; somehow the dimensions of the PG stock just didn't fit me.

(If you have a source with decent prices for M1S90 accessories, I'm interested.)
