Re: Mental Illness and LTC
I do not see discrimination. I know your disappointed but there obviously was a reason you sought the attention of a mental health Doctor, I hope you received the help you needed. If you disagreed with the Doctor's diagnoses, it should have been best addressed at the time, unless there was some benefit that you received due to the diagnoses that made you accept it. Bipolar has a wide margin and there are many that would never qualify nor should they. You still have a chance to prove your qualification or you can just feel pick on and do nothing. Whatever you decide, I am pulling and praying for the best outcome. Not being mean just blunt and sometimes that is what is needed. Good Luck!

There was. And it had nothing to do with wanting to harm anyone with a firearm. But I did get help until I developed my ways of coping.twomillenium wrote:I do not see discrimination. In the mental health field, you can fall under certain categories, but it is extremely nuanced. Something the state of Texas doesn't recognize yet, which is why I call discrimination. I don't believe constant feelings of guilt or hopelessness or inadequacy constitutes losing the most practical part of 2A rights. But for others, who have the same diagnosis and show homicidal thoughts and tendencies, it would be understandable.
So, if there is anyone who can carry in Texas but also has a mental health diagnosis, please share your story. For now, I'm gonna talk to my Dr about it and see what he has to say.

Have you considered reciprocity? Several states use mental health as a criterion only if the applicant has been involuntarily committed or adjudicated incompetent to handle their own affairs.

Are you hinting at going out of state and getting my LTC that way? That's the only understanding of reciprocity that I have.apostate wrote:Have you considered reciprocity? When you stopped taking your meds, did your doctor approve of that? If so, there may be a good chance that he will sign a letter on your behalf. If you stopped taking meds against medical advice, I can see the doctor not wanting to sign a letter for you. You will never know until you try.

There are non-resident LTC/CHL permits from states like Flordia or Virginia that don't require you to go out of state, just require you to go through their licensing process to obtain one. Some offer online courses, others you are required to find an instructor/class for that state, just depends on the state.Matthew Brown wrote:Are you hinting at going out of state and getting my LTC that way? With the new drop in price for the Texas LTC, I think it could be worth going for the process and applying after the new license costs go into effect - you might be able to get it approved by the board, worst case if it doesn't work out, you try and get a license from a state that doesn't ban you outright.
You don't have to answer if you don't want to - but do you believe you have bipolar disorder? Typically from what I've seen/read one does not 'go into remission' or get better from bipolar - not an accusation/attack, just personal experience.
Have you sought out a second opinion about your diagnosis? I know someone who was diagnosed as Bipolar, after getting a 2nd opinion they were later evaluated as having Borderline Personality Disorder - but they are missing one of the key ingredients usually associated with it, the self-harm part, so it was originally excluded as a diagnosis (least that's how it was explained). I bring this up because Bipolar is kind of the catch-all for a lot of mood swing/personality disorders from what I understand - the catch being a lot of the things that could be mis-diagnosed as bipolar would probably not be a disqualifier for your LTC.

I personally believe that the only time I'm having problems, it's with depression. Never have I truly had a manic episode.
I might try to just not mention my diagnosis, and see if that info is private or not. But I don't know how that will work.
No, we only have the one mental health clinic in the area that I know of.

Depression is not to be taken lightly. I have had four friends of various ages and demographics who have taken their lives with firearms due to depression.Matthew Brown wrote:I personally believe that the only time I'm having problems, it's with depression. Never have I truly had a manic episode.

Not listing your condition is fraudulent. You need to do as we stated and get a letter from a psychiatrist.Matthew Brown wrote:I personally believe that the only time I'm having problems, it's with depression. Never have I truly had a manic episode.

Being willing to comment intentional fraud on a Govt. document already shows that you may not be of the mind or type that need to carry a firearm.Matthew Brown wrote:I personally believe that the only time I'm having problems, it's with depression. Never have I truly had a manic episode.

Not only is it fraudulent to take that course of action, but even if the state would have granted you a license in spite of past medical history, if they find out somehow that you withheld relevant information from your application, they can come back later and revoke the license.

You'd probably be greeted with more then license revocation.
