California CCW permit

Post by RicRogue »

Does anyone have one? How hard is it to get?

I may be moving there, and it is definately something I want to pursue. I know they are strict and that it is a MAY issue state.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I dont have one but I can tell you that you will have to get rid of all your high cap mags. They do not allow anything over 10 rounders I belive.

All I know is that they're not easy to get in the best of cases, and impossible in many counties: http://www.californiaconcealedcarry.com/

Good luck with your move, whatever is happening.

I don't remember where I heard this, so take it as you will, but I heard that if you move to Kalifornia with standard capacity mags, they're grandfathered in, but you won't be able to purchase more. You also could not sell/give them to anyone other than a LEO in that state. IANAL, so please verify this info before relying on it to keep you out of the pokey.

You can't take them with you. Here is alinkwith some good FAQ's, one of which states:

I am moving into California and I own several handguns. What are the new-resident registration requirements?

You are considered to be a personal handgun importer as defined by California law. You may bring all of your otherwise California-legal firearms with you, but you must report all of your handguns to the DOJ within 60 days as required utilizing the New Resident Handgun Ownership Report. You are not required to report rifles or shotguns. You may not bring ammunition feeding devices with a capacity greater than ten rounds, machineguns, or assault weapons into California.

Your success in getting a CA CHL is directly related to the county you live in. In general, rural counties are not too bad while the more urban ones are almost hopeless (unless you are a celebrity).

packing.org used to have a full list of CA counties along with the CHL policies of each, but that site has been down for a while now. I am not aware of a good substitute.

I would suggest contacting the state NRA affiliate organization and asking them.

Ric -

All I have to say is good luck. As a long time resident of California [Bay Area] I had to give up my goal to get a CCW permit. Unless you are a retired LEO or have political connections/money you are probably out of luck. Being a movie star or pro athlete also helps.

As one of the other forum members stated the rural counties are much more likely to issue a permit. Since CA is not a shall issue state you have to have a "good reason" for obtaining a CCW. That reason may not be "good enough" for the sheriff or police chief in your county.

It comes down to the fact that if they don't want to issue one, they don't have to. I don't think that there is any recourse. A lot of times you get the run around. The county sheriff will tell you that you have to get one from the police chief and the chief will tell you that you have to get one from the sheriff. Sorry to be so negative, but that's the way it is.

The "personal handgun importer law" really stinks. It's just another tool for the gun grabbers.

I am glad to live in Texas.

Best to you.

See! I told you to verify it first. I guess I was thinking of some other state with restrictive gun laws, or they closed this hole after I had heard about it. Thank you, Keith B, for setting us straight.

No job or opportunity is worth moving to California...

Sorry for the negative statement, I am normally not like this when it comes to someone considering a move like this...

There are ways to cope I suppose, but for a state in general to make it unattractive to choose to practice a moral and inalienable right to protect yourself, or at the very least enjoy a sport thats fun and have good friends to do it with...

I wrote California off many years ago...There is no hope, save another disaster that brings about civil unrest or some other horrible event...One that I hope never happens, but they made their bed...

Just my opinion...

What I learned from browsing that forum is that in most counties you can forget about getting a CHL unless you are "connected", rich, famous, or all of the above.

How people can tolerate living under that level of oppression I will never understand.

Combine that with the high taxes and general level of insanity and you'll understand why I say that you couldn't drag me to CA with a team of Clysdales.
