Looking for a Gun for the wife

My wife has got her CHL and now is looking for a new gun to go with it, I would like her to shoot a 45 Auto of some type but with a Budget of like 400.00 I am having a hard time finding her something .

Any help here??

If she is not an experienced shooter (with autos): Meaning she completely understands how the weapon functions, all of the safety features, and is able to recognize and "clear" every type of "jam"....then allow me to suggest a revolver.

A .357 stoked with .38 + P's is plenty of protection, and she can practice with standard velocity .38's

If on the other hand....she is familiar (and comfortable with) autos then keep your eyes peeled for a good quality used firearm. Even then, 9mm might be more appropriate.

Of utmost importance is: The firearm be 100% reliable, and that it fit HER (not your) hand. Let her handle several different weapons, instead of just showing up with a gun you picked.

She is very well trained in the use of a Auto as she is now carrying my full sized 1911 Kimber and she wants a smallier one .

But thanks for the advice as she is the one thats going to carrie it ,what I am looking for is some Advice of what to show her.

Bersa makes a nice handgun in your price range. I do not have any experience with this particular caliber but overall I have had good luck with their compact guns. I am sure you have seen some fine compact .45 weapons, but they are pricey!! I am glad to be a long time 9mm buff.......they are cheaper!

Might look at the Taurus. A friend has one and loves it. Shoots well.

Take her to the range and let her pick out a few. Most places will let you rent to try. See what she likes. Not what you like. Trust me on this one. Experience talks here.

Unless she's heart set on a .45ACP the a used S&W 3913 or new 908 or 908S is a great auto to look at for a woman to use. 8+1 of 9mm in a slim single stack package. The Smith 457 and 457S offer a similar package in .45 ACP (7+1) and the CS45 is even a smaller package (6+1). These guns are alloy frame and not a lot heavier than most plastic guns and can be had on the used market quite reasonably. 3rd generation S&W autos are as good and reliable handguns as any made.

My g/f has been shooting my Glocks (9mm) for several months now. She's quite comfortable with the auto loading pistol. She shoots quite well with both of them. I'd better get practicing !! But.... the Glock grip is a bit too wide for her hand as may be the case with other ladies.

We have gone to several ranges and rented various pistols in 9mm and .45 cal. She's become partial to the 1911 style. She decided that a CZ 75 series 9mm fit her hand well. Academy has them for around $400 + tax.

I think that's a good choice for her-- she likes that style pistol, the stock grips fit her hand as they're thinner, and she can change the grips as she fits (pink ones ?? AGGHHHH )

Great! Sounds like she is "good to go" then.

Can you give us a few more parameters. Thus far, we know there is a budget, and that the pistol needs to be smaller than a (government 1911).

Does it need to be small enough to fit in a purse? Is she stuck on .45 caliber? Does it need to be Single Action? Can it just "approximate" the feel and function of the 1911 she is already familiar with?

Someone has already mentioned the CZ 75 line. They offer a compact model that is DA/SA, or they have 75 B-SA that is a bit larger, but is SA.
Very good pistols for the money IMO.

we She is the proud owner of a Colt Officers ACP after it gets back from the Smith to have a Ambo type Thumb safety added and some smallier things done to it.


I got it for just over 425.00 and its what she wanted.

If it's in good shape, that's an excellent price! I can't recall the last time I've seen any Officer ACP for that price, good shape or not.

Charles.its in NRA grade 90% and I got it from a freind that wanted it to go to a good home . I live by there South store Kalrog.

I live outside of Smithville so the south store is a good place for me to go.


Now what type of a Holster do you gents adn Ladys reconmend??

she is going to be carrying it most as she is off from work and don't always carrie a purse so I need a way she can carry it??

A crossdraw fannypack would be a good choice for casual wear. Otherwise, an OWB designed for a woman's figure.
