Just keep shooting!

Post by stevie_d_64 »

200 down, 800 to go...

It never ceases to amaze me when I am right...(I must admit it is not too hard)

Wife Unit and I went to the range this morning, as part of the "deal" I made with her to purchasing a case of 9mm for her to shoot up in a short period of time...

I set up 5 "ringed" targets, one for me and my 50 rounds, and 4 for her and her 200 rounds...

I told her 50 per target, and lets see how she progresses...

The first target was understandibly low and to the left...She's throwing the rounds out of the pistol, anticipating the shot, and she's closing her eyes when the shot goes off...

I let her shoot the first 50 without saying a word...

After that first target she was ready to quit...

So I stepped up and shot my 50 in fairly short order, and kept the group at 10 yards at about a 3-4 inch group...With a few thrown out as flukes...

I loaded her back up after she watched me, and told her 50 more at the next target...And without too much re-assurance and "suggestions" she started to bring the group up, but it was still to the left...

So I thought about trying a test...

I took my Chap-Stick and clouded up her right eye (on her eye protection, I'm not that cruel ;-) )...And I was correct...We are both right handed, and left eye dominate...How amazing is that!

The last 100 rounds were starting to really come up on the bull after that, and she was really getting the hang of firing that pistol, which is what I have been saying all along...Just keep shooting!

Her grouping is coming in a little tighter, its now within about a 8-10 inches and is fairly centered high to low on the target...Maybe a little to the left still...

I think by next week, she'll have another 200 down, and that flinch and anticipation, with the eye closing will be less of an issue...

What I need to do now is get a few more mags for her pistol so I don't have to rush so much to get the one extra she has loaded quick enough before she starts screaming I"M OUT! RELOAD!

Geesh...I'm so under-appreciated...

I figure I'm going to be out of the picture in a few more hundred rounds...Then it becomes a budget issue...

"Hon...When you going to get another couple of cases of ammo???We really are running low..."

And I thought married life would be limited to just those calls to pick up a loaf of bread, and a gallon of milk???

 Steve's really just pickled tink about this development...

Something this mom learned from her son

In addition to the ringed targets, try some that are just fun to shoot at! Save those milk cartons, & fill them with water (maybe some food coloring as well). A well-placed shot gives immediate feedback, and incredible satisfaction ("Hey, did you see how high that waterspout shot?!?") They're great to end a session with, after putting a bunch downrange on more traditional targets. But, if you close your eyes when you shoot, you'll miss the splash!

"Past their prime" fruits and veggies are fun, as well, and if you're out "in the boonies" like we are when we shoot, there's no cleanup - we know the desert critters will appreciate the treats once we leave.

There's also a wealth of free, downloadable targets available online that you can print out at home, including traditional rings, game animals, and novelty pictures.

I find that shooting at a variety of targets helps me, especially when I'm learning a new gun. I'm not saying change the target type every magazine's worth, but one or two diff. target types per session helps keep me from becoming stale. Sometimes, I'll find I do better on one kind of target than another - when I figure out what I'm doing differently, my overall scores tend to improve.

YMMV (your missus may vary!)

All guns have at least two safeties. One's digital, one's cognitive. In other words - keep the digit off the trigger until ready to fire, and THINK. Some guns also have mechanical safeties on top of those. But if the first two don't work, the mechanical ones aren't guaranteed. - me

+1 for additional mags. Took my daughter to the range 2 weeks ago. I didn't get to shoot much as I was reloading for her.
When we got home, I had her clean all weapons and then had her practice reloading.
Going again today so maybe I can throw a few down range and play with my new toy.
This was her first time to shoot anything but revolver.

Stevie, If you want her to get through the ammunition quickly, have her call Donna. One afternoon and it will be gone...

Yep, shes in Donna's ladies class over there...I'm hoping she'll only have a hundred or so rounds left by the first weekend of next month from this case I bought her...

I'd like to get on a regular ammo purchase schedule for both of us...A half case every other month or so...

I already have a half-case (loose) ready to go through for my .40's...I still have a few hundred in 50 round boxes in the bullpen I want to go through first before I hit that half-case...

I'm consentrating on getting her through this, and anything else I have lying around in 9mm...Its a fun exersize...

And I can't have any fun at all while she's in Donna's class...I get run off...I don't know why??? I'm very quiet, I don't get up and run around watching and all that...

I don't think Donna likes me???

Maybe my mere presense irritates...

That's why I keep MY hubby around. I don't clean guns, and I don't buy factory ammo. He cleans, AND he reloads... what more could a woman ask? Yup, he's a keeper.
