Funny thing is, if you have one of the "smart" thermostats, your utility company can change it without you knowing. Thats just another reason I refuse to sell a Nest, Ecobee, or any other "smart" thermostat.

You have to 'opt in' and allow them to access/change your thermostat settings. However, a lot of folks apparently gave their permission in exchange for a chance to win a prize without thinking about how it might really affect them. Not that I have a 'smart' thermostat — I don't see a need to access my thermostat via the internet.

This probably does not qualify as an 'unintended consequence', but rather an 'unexpected or unanticipated consequence'. But, there was nothing really sneaky or under handed about it. People just went for something that seemed 'FREE' without realizing that there could be an actual 'cost' down the road. Sort of like people who vote for democrats…

What makes this so funny to me is that I'm usually a (German) Metal Head, but lately I've been going back to my roots and enjoying a lot of real C&W music (especially trucking songs), and I just listened to Folsom Prison Blues right as I pulled into my driveway. ROFL
