Seen a few posts on this, but this guy has the Deputy's body cam footage and the footage from inside the store. I agree with his basic assessment in the lower part of his first post. Thankfully deputy survived and was shot twice in shin and thigh. From inside the store camera, you can see the advantage the bad guy had and likely saw the deputy doing the tactical reload and tried to take advantage.
I would add to remind myself that concealment and cover are not the same and in this situation the deputy couldn't see the bad guy, but the bad guy was very likely able to see him when he got up close to the door. So not all concealment angles are equal.
A couple notes:
-that tactical reload almost cost the officer. I don't think it was a bad call given the situation but on a two way range both parties get a vote and sometimes they do things you wouldn't expect
-not seating the mag didn't cost him but it does show why doing so is important

After watching it a few times I think he hit the mag release his thumb was on it. But I could be wrong.

It looks like the deputy fired 3x rounds from the fresh magazine, then the magazine fell free from the gun. Pretty sure his support side grip pressed hard onto the strong side thumb activating the magazine release.

Looks the same to me. I think it was the pancake from one hand to another, his grip was 'off' from normal placing his fingers over the mag release, 3 rounds later the stress response squeeze of the hand released the mag.Mike S wrote: Sat Apr 26, 2025 4:24 pmbobby wrote: Fri Apr 25, 2025 10:41 pm After watching it a few times I think he hit the mag release his thumb was on it. This is why we ALWAYS teach that unless you are wounded that firearm remains in your primary hand. Period. You should be able to depress the radio PTT by memory with your support hand only, even if it is across body. His radio muscle memory is likely 100% right handed only.
Might have still been a bit hot for my tastes on tactical reload. We teach that once site control and security is established.
