Walther P22 anyone?
I've been planning on getting a Walther P22 for a while now, mainly for use as a plinker and ranch gun (snakes, rodents, etc.). At the suggestion of my wife(!), I picked one up at the Austin gun show this last weekend.
I'm glad I did! The gun is so much fun to shoot. And the fact that it's .22 so it costs hardly nothing makes me feel even better. I've had a couple of FTE's so far, but I attribute that to the break in process. I plan on doing some polishing to smooth things out. I put about 600 rounds through it the first two days, and had to make a trip to Wal-Mart for another 1,100 rounds just so I could get my fix today! I have smaller than average hands and it fits me perfect. I wish they'd make a 9mm in the same form factor.
My wife even enjoys it, and I can hardly ever get her to go shooting with me. We spent some time yesterday taking turns shooting it from our deck at a steel swinging target across the creek (~20 yards). Ahhh, good times.
In the coming months I'd like to suppress it. Decent suppressors are in the $200 range for this gun. Not bad if you ask me (but then there's still the $200 tax...).
And just FYI for those wondering, it will shoot shotshell/snake shot fine, but obviously doesn't have enough force to cycle the slide.
Overall, I've been really impressed with this little $255 gun. I haven't seen much discussion about the P22 here so I'd thought I'd throw this out there. It would make a great trainer for someone new to shooting, or as an all around plinker. I'm really happy with mine and have had pretty good reliability with standard velocity or greater stuff. I got maybe 1 FTE out of 10 when using subsonics. Initially there were some negative reviews when it first came out, but mine was manufactured in 2007 and doesn't suffer from the problems people were having at the time. The gun definitely isn't a primary carry piece, but could maybe serve as a BUG if it's all you had. I don't ever intend on carrying mine.
I just had to share my experience here with everyone. It's injected enthusiasm and excitement back into my shooting life!

I love plinking with my P22, though it can be picky with ammo. Never had a hiccup using CCI Stingers.
Nice choice!
If you like the form of the P22 you might try the Walther P99.

Congrats for your new 22. I was seriously considering one a few months ago. They seem to be well made and reliable guns. I ended up buying a Firestorm 22 as my primary carry is a Bersa and they are basically the same gun. They are pretty much the same price and I am very happy with it but I'm pretty sure I would have been happy with the P22.
I prefer copper platted HP ammo as some of the indoor ranges in Houston do not let you shoot lead ammo. I usually have 1-2 FTF each 300 rounds using Federal. Seems like some rounds eject but do not cycle the next round. When using CCI Minimag never had a problem but it's bit more pricy.
Enjoy!

The only problem with the P99 is that it is too long a reach from the back strap to the trigger for small hands.Tajovo wrote:If you like the form of the P22 you might try the Walther P99.

I have had a P22 for a few years. It is a great pistol. I feed it a steady diet of CCI Minimags and it never skips a beat. Before I got my Bersa, I carried it with CCI Veliocitors when I needed a smaller carry than my Sig Pro. While not ideal, I had no doubt as to the reliability of the pistol.
Oh yeah, it is fun to shoot.

My wife has a collection of them, as long as she shoot CCI Minimags or Stinger through them she has never had a FTF or FTE. As soon as she tries a different brand it chokes all the time. I put the supressor from my mosquito on it and she loves it.

I bought one several years ago when my daughter was 7. It was her first gun to shoot, but I enjoy the heck out of shooting it too.

My 12yo nephew got one for Christmas. He loves it and hasn't had any FTF or jams I am aware of.
