Re: Do you carry extra ammunition?
No.
The last train out of any station will not be filled with nice people.

2 wilson 47ds in back left pocket in a cheap nylon mag carrier so they look like a wallet
Reasonable gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.
Re: Do you carry extra ammunition?
NO, but I should. As soon as I get a mag carrier I will.

Re: Do you carry extra ammunition?
I never leave home without an extra mag...not so much for the extra ammo, but as cheap insurance against a mag related malfunction. I doubt I'll ever need 31 rounds of 9mm but having a spare mag to clear a malfunction could mean the difference between me walking away from a gun battle or being carried away in a body bag.
Carrying a gun without a spare mag is like driving without a spare tire. Most of the time it's just dead weight but when you need it you really need it.

Always one 10rd WC in a Comp-Tac carrier.
With perceived elevated threat a double of the same.
With really high threat, ie: Rita a quad pack of the above & a backup.

Carry 24-7 or guess right.

Re: Do you carry extra ammunition?
Depends.
Right now I'm on the road. I have 2 guns Berretta mostly stays in the car. 2 Mags in door well. Ruger single mag on my belt at 9:oo
Thats 46 rounds on me while I'm driving. while at home I will often grab the Ruger without worrying about mags.

Re: Do you carry extra ammunition?
I carry two extra mags with either the XD or 1911, at all times
Re: Do you carry extra ammunition?
Just out of curiosity, are you part of a speacial response team, or is the patrol rifle, and gear standard for patrol officers?CHL/LEO wrote:Off duty I carry at least one extra mag. Now on duty - that's a different story. I have the standard two mags on the duty belt and then we have vests that we keep in the car to wear when we deploy our patrol rifles. On it I have two extra pistol mags, five 30 round rifle mags and other required items. I also keep another four 30 round mags in my rifle case which stays in the trunk.
I look at extra ammo just like insurance - better to have it and not need it than the other way around.
Re: Do you carry extra ammunition?
Definately carry spare mag.
Actually I carry two because it helps balance the weight better and keeps me from having to hitch my holster up as much.

Re: Do you carry extra ammunition?
No. I'm using my 10 rounds to get me out of the situation. I don't plan on staying for the fight.
We all have our own level of readiness that makes us comfortable. For some, that means being aware of their surroundings or getting a black belt in some martial art, or carrying a knife, or a pistol, or a pistol with extra ammo, or two pistols, or a hand grenade, or having a full time body guard, or an army. Find your comfort level and stick with it.

Standard for any officer that's Patrol Rifle certified. All patrol officers are eligible for training if they request it - however, it's a volunteer group only - no one can be required to take the class. The rifle, all equipment, gear, ammo, etc. is furnished by the department. All other "non patrol" officers can be trained and certified if they purchase an approved AR15 and gear. We do have some flexibility in arranging our vest as long as we have the required items on it. It's a Blackwater molle vest so you can add extra items if you want. Mag pouches and first aid kit are required.Just out of curiosity, are you part of a speacial response team, or is the patrol rifle, and gear standard for patrol officers?
This all came about due to the bank robbery shootout a few years back that occurred with the Richardson and Plano officers. After watching all of the in-car videos and TV coverage, it became clear to our command staff that we were way under equipped if (or when) we got into a similar confrontation. Our Firearms Training Center had been trying to get a Patrol Rifle program for years and after this event they finally approved it.

Re: Do you carry extra ammunition?
considering most confrontations are within 5ft. and no more than 3 rounds are fired...I feel safe with my 14 rounds.
every once in a while I will put a spare clip in my pocket, but not usually. I got a dual mag carrier but never use it.

Re: Do you carry extra ammunition?
Never thought of them as ammo, but I sure wouldn't want to get hit with themLiberty wrote:Depends.

When I carry the 605, I carry a speed strip at minimum, and a speedloader and two strips as normal daily loadout. The PT-99 has 17+1, and a spare 15, the 1911 is 8+1 with at least another 7, preferably two 10s as spares on the occasions it gets to go out. The 4" K frame doesn't get carried, but I have two full speedloaders near it all the time.
Even just out plinking with the Blackhawk I carry 6 Hornady XTPs in a shirt pocket. I definitely don't want to be in a bad situation with an empty gun.
Re: Do you carry extra ammunition?
Many thanks for this. I hope every patrol officer requests and gets training. And I hope every "non-patrol" officer buys an M4 and gets training. Good training.CHL/LEO wrote:Standard for any officer that's Patrol Rifle certified. Two weeks from now I'll be in Victoria at DTI's course. Handgun, BUG, shotgun, carbine. Each attendee can contribute extra money to fund LEO's participation. Many of us do, and local and regional LEOs get much-needed exposure to defensive tactics. These aren't SWAT guys; they're detectives and patrolmen. They learn along with the rest of us.
And the course ain't easy. Trust me.
