Last night in Beeville I pulled into the Best Western motel around 2130 or so; I had already noticed a crown vic behind me with a light bar and a search spotlight. There were firefighters at the motel, some of who had a department crown vic decked out in lights, figured it was them coming in behind me. I pulled over into some parking spaces and waited for them to go by so I could pull around and back into a space. Instead, all the lights came on and cop steps out. hmmm.
I ask him what's up? as he edges up from behind. He says he thinks my window tint is too dark. My Baloney Meter pegs. I tell him I find that's really odd as I give him DL and CHL. He actually seemed to relax at this point. Asks if I have a weapon. Yep, handgun in my pocket. He says OK, gives me back my stuff and now says my license plate number didn't match the vehicle, had I bought the truck recently? Two years ago. He steps back, checks the plates front and rear again, calls in the number. I hear the reply back -- now it matches my truck. He comes back to the window, says 'sorry, I was off by one number when I called it in the first time.' He had thought it might be a stolen truck, says they get a lot them hauling illegals. No hard feelings. We laugh and go separate ways.
The encounter did seem to lighten up considerably when he check my licenses.

Re: Beeville
guess not many CHL's are busted for transporting illegals in stolen trucks.ELB wrote:

Re: Beeville
So, where were you hiding them?

Re: Beeville
Heh. Believe me, if I had known of any illegals about, I would have been flagging down the cop, not other way around.wheelgun1958 wrote:So, where were you hiding them?
Break-break.
Just occurred to me as I was remembering the conversation I had with the policeman -- I don't believe he ever asked me for my insurance card, or at least I sure don't remember giving it to him. I would have had to dig for it a bit. Once I gave him the DL and the CHL, he asked me about a weapon, I told him it was in my pocket, and he basically seemed to relax. We had the conversation about when I bought the truck, he figures out he called in the wrong license plate number, we grin and go separate ways. I think once he saw the CHL (and, perhaps, the truck was empty), he decided the situation didn't come close to what he originally suspected, and decided to regroup and recheck, and once the license plate checked out, it was good enough.
