I sent a copy of my DD214. The $70 check was cashed, but no plastic as of yet.

P.S. I think there should be an added discount for having a Ranger tab

I have the same question. If I am Active Duty, do I still need the Proficiency Certification?

When I spoke to a person in Austin, she told me that I would have to take the class but did not need to do the firing portion. I don't remember what paperwork she said to send in that case. My thought was to do it anyway since it is included in all classes. I could just see problems in my future if I didn't.

As far as what needs to be included with your app -- I was told to include a copy of military ID (front/back) and a copy of my orders or current LES. I sent all of this and have not gotten any letters saying I goofed up, so... we'll see.

New to the forum, Howdy from Spring.

I just got my packet from DPS and when I filled out the form online I put I put down I'm a Veteran. I have been out since 2005 but I'm Inactive Reserves till 2009. Can I change my application to Active Military/ Reserves or not would they accept that? Also I'm gathering from the previous posts that when I finish my CHL class I should send in my DD214 with my packet correct?

I took the class right after the law changed in 2007. This is what I sent DPS and I had no problems at all. I sent them a copy (front & back) of my military ID card, a copy of my most current LES, and the proof of service letter provided by the vMPF (for Air Force Members). I am sure the other branches of service have this letter as well but I couldn't tell you where exactly to go get it. You can ask your personnel folks and they should be able to point you in the right direction. The ID card and LES were all that were needed but I sent the proof of service letter as well.

I can't help you with the inactive reserve part. Maybe one of the CHL instructors on the board can help you out. I would give it a try. The worst they can say is no.

Lastly, if you are military and have proof of qualification with a handgun you can bring it to the class and this will exempt you from the shooting portion; however, you will have to attend the class up to that point. Unless you are pressed for time, it is an excuse to go put rounds down range so ...

Yeah I can't get anyone to give me a firm answer about the inactive reserves. I just find it odd that because I didn't apply for my CHL w/in 1 year of getting out that now I'll have to pay, and someone who did wont ever have to pay.

I didn't get it either but it works the same for retirees as well. The state also gave AD Military free hunting/fishing liscences this year as well but retirees/former military weren't included. I guess they felt they had to make a cut-off somewhere and that was where they did it.

Like I said before, I would ask DPS about the inactive reserves part. The worst they could say was "no".

Anyone else have an OUT OF STATE DRIVERS LICSENSE? I have a FL DL and want to make sure this won't delay my application. (My orders qualify me for a Resident CHL, correct?)
