Handguns for Under 21?

Post by Coup »

I was curious, is it legal for someone to purchase a handgun in Texas if they are under 21 but at least 18? I know you can't buy the ammunition but is it possible to own the handgun?

It is legal for the to own a handgun, and they can legally buy it from a private citizen. It is illegal for a dealer to sell a handgun to a person under 21.

Under state law, it is illegal to sell or transfer in any way any firearm to anyone under 18 without written permission of the parent or legal guardian.

I had one at 18, was very careful to “store it to and from the farm (unladed in a case, in a bag, out of reach, ammo in a different bag) always had a truck so I had no trunk. Buddy was hassled as he was not a careful but still legal. Got CHL first opportunity I could, just to avoid hassle.

I leaned that I had to go to gun shop to by rounds as wal-mart would not let me… I also thought it funny if I bought 22’s they asked if it was for rifle or pistol, then determined if you had to be 18 or 21 to purchase…
