As many CHL instructors will tell you, women (and girls) tend to do better than males when it comes to benefitting from training. Why? Because they'll actually listen to and follow instructions, owing to the fact that they don't have that built-in "I'm a man and I know what I'm doing" attitude that most of us suffer from, even if only subconsciously.

Shoot...I've heard that, if lost, many women will even pull over and ask for directions
Excellent point!

Guys have a bunch of factors working against us. Most of us have built-in bad habits we acquired from playing cowboys-and-indians as kids, and watching Starsky and Hutch on TV. Couple that with visits to the range where we pick up a gun and shoot with no instruction AND our aversion to ask for help, it's amazing that we can even hit the target!

Ladies, on the other hand, freely admit that they have no idea what to do. They have no macho ego to protect. They listen, learn and repeat what I show them. They're not impatient, wanting to skip from step 1 to step 35 as men do.

It's also interesting that most women learn to shoot and simply tuck this skill away with their other skills. Guys, on the other hand, are continually fascinated with shooting, wanting to spend more time at the range, and buy bigger and 'badder' guns; usually to the chagrin of the woman in their life.

Good points. My daughter's shooting coach says he doesn't even want to work with males, says they're almost uncoachable. Males come into shooting sports knowing everything at the start and aren't interested in instruction. Females learn much more quickly. I've heard that all of the American long distance shooting records are currently held by women. In the IDF, most all of the sniper riflery instructors are female.

Here's a pic of my daughter when she was just getting started last year. Coach had heard about her and approached us to find out if she'd be willing to work with him to train for competition. She's reached NRA Expert classification in just over one year. For those of you who have been teachers or coaches, don't you wish all of your students were this attentive?

I wish I could get my daughter (now 18) interested in shooting, as I think she has all of the attributes required be good at it. Alas, it's my own fault for not trying to do that when she was MUCH younger and still interesting in doing outdoor stuff with me (she was my original fishing buddy, and loved it.) Unfortunately, somewhere during middle school she turned into a girly-girl on me and lost interest in that sort of thing. Oh well. At least she's still adventurous when it comes to the wild game that her brother and I put on the table. Mom...not so much.

You're apparently confusing me with my wife. Yes, my parents thought it would be wildly funny to name me Tracy. They were, I believe, taking in a bit too much Johnny Cash at the time, and had already named my sister "Sue".

Down in San Antonio I was a line instructor for a few groups of Basic Trainees, the males all thought they were elite snipers and didn't follow a piece of advice. The females on the other hand listened and did everything I said and most of them shot very well after a little instruction.
