(4/03/06 - KTRK/BAYTOWN, TX) - A police officer opened fire on a teenager after allegedly catching him in the middle of a hold up. The intended robbery victims were an elderly couple in Baytown.
Around 11pm, the suspect tried to go into the couple's home through the garage door. Investigators say he pointed a gun at the couple.
The woman was able to call 911. When officers arrived, they surprised the suspect, who was apparently still robbing the victims.
Officers say the teen lifted his gun at the officers and two policemen opened fire, killing 18-year-old Kevin Harris. The suspect's family showed up at the scene a short time later.
"What they did, I'm sure it was unnecessary. They didn't have to kill him," said Nick Haynes, one of the victim's relatives.
"I do know that the officers did give the subject an order. He did not comply and shots were exchanged," said Lisa Rynearson with the Baytown Police Department. "The Harris County shoot team was dispatched and is investigating it and so is the Baytown internal affairs, is also going to conduct a review of it also."
The elderly couple was not hurt. The couple believes they left the garage door open. They told authorities that the suspect was forcing them to go to an ATM to get money.
The elderly couple was the victim. The robber was a perpetrator who obviously was either deaf or thought BPD would not shoot. Great job, BPD. Shame on you, perp's relatives.

Uhhhhh. The moment he lifted and pointed his hand canon at the police, it's game set match. I would love to put this kid's parents in the police's shoes and see how they would react when they see the end of a gun barrel.anygunanywhere wrote:Officers say the teen lifted his gun at the officers and two policemen opened fire, killing 18-year-old Kevin Harris. I agree with all of the above. One thing I have and will always have a problem with is calling an eighteen (or nineteen) year old a teenager. I realize the last syllable is teen, but these are legally adults. I can empathize with how the family feels about their child being gone, but their "child" was an armed adult felon caught in the act. Of course, it wasn't their son that committed:assault with a deadly weapon, attempted robbery, attempted kidnapping, attempted capital murder of a police officer, etc., he was just misunderstood, or he was running with a bad crowd, or that wasn't his gun (at least the first three were premeditated, due to the gun). When he raised the gun, he wasn't going to shoot either of the Officers, he was just trying to scare them or show them his pretty gun. Maybe he didn't know the difference between "right' and "wrong"? No, that can't be it because that would mean that the parents were partially to blame for his death by not doing their job.
(Sorry for the sarcasm because even though he was a criminal, it was still a waste of a life.)
Everyone reaches what is called "an age of accountability". This is when they know the difference between right and wrong, good and bad, yes and no. Usually (or should I say "it used to be") when a child learned that the word no meant bad and then went ahead and did something after being told no, they were disciplined, punished, spanked, whichever word you choose to use (Sorry, mine were spanked). This taught them that there were consequences for their actions (sometimes severe) just as there were rewards. Apparently, this eighteen year old ADULT understood the rewards of his actions, he just "misunderstood" the consequences.
This is what is wrong with society (at large) today. No longer do they hold a person responsible for his actions, they want to punish everyone or blame everyone else. Now it is a disease, or syndrome, or disorder. As an example, when I was going to school, I had trouble making good grades. I studied and studied for hours on end and couldn't remember anything. My parents said I wasn't paying attention or trying. This made me try harder and harder and I graduated High School just after I turned 17 (I had started school at 5 and so had been 1 year or more younger than everyone else in my class, plus my Dad was in the Navy and we moved 11 times in 18 years). This was no excuse and I never dreamed of it. I am now 49 years old and I still have trouble remembering things, so I carry a pen and pad with me to write things down. They now have a name for what I (and my oldest son) have. It's now called "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder". What I call it is "No Excuse" and have told my son the same. You learn to deal with problems and work around them.
I have two sons-one is 21 and the other 23. I have taught them right from wrong and that there will always be consequences and repercussions for the things they do. Hopefully they listened and understood so they will never have to find out as this young man did.
Sorry for such a long post but as you can tell, this is something I feel rather strongly about.

If anyone else, but the kid himself, is blame should be his parents for not properly raising their kid. Then again he should know better and probably realize the consequences. The kid gambled and he lost.rodnocker1 wrote: This is what is wrong with society (at large) today. Anygun,
I have to grin now.. whenever I see the word "perp" used here.
Not too long ago txinvestigator pointed out to me "that in Texas we call them Bad Guys, not perps"...."Thats some Yankee talk"
Cut me to the quick...(the Yankee part). Very effective however.
I'm surprised he has let you get away with it.

I have been watching too many "Cops" reruns while in Canada. Not much on the tube up here. Half of the channels are in french, most of the rest only have shows that are politically correct.

Saturday 4-8-06 9:44 am Continental flight from Detroit.
I just might do the bend down and kiss the ground.
On second thought the airport carpet is pretty seedy.
I will wait and lay a good smooch on Mrs. Anygun.
I need to remind her to bring my pistola.
Will be in League City by early afternoon. Mrs. Anygun reports that the pool is in great shape, she has a restaurant in mind in Galveston for supper, the adult beverages are stocked for the evening.
The guys up here say I am getting a little testy to be around.
