WTT - Nikon D70 Kit for 1911...?

Every since a LE friend of mine pointed me to the Quail Creek thread on this forum, I've been lurking around the site. Now that I'm about to take my CHL, I decided to make this one of my daily message boards to visit. You all seem like a real stand-up crowd, and I appreciate that. The "Real Miss America" thead proves that point. Thank you!

Just gauging interest, but am leaning towards trading off my Nikon D70 digital SLR kit for a 1911. I would estimate the kit value at approximately $500.

For those that don't know, digital SLR cameras virtually eliminate shutter lag, which helps when taking action photos, and pics of children. You can also swap the lens with any other compatible lens, so you can have ultra-wide angle shots, or extreme telephoto shots.

My camera has been extremely well taken care of, always transported in a case, and works flawlessly. The battery is incredible. And it takes awesome photos. I use it for hobby - nothing major - I would guess I have taken ~5-6k photos with it (Nikon rates the shutter life at 40k clicks, though 100k seems to be average for casual users from what I've read on the net). 50000 shots over 5 years means 10K images a year or about 200 per week, week after week. I don't shoot anywhere near that much - ever!!

I would include everything that came in the original kit (camera, 17-80 lens, memory card, manual, charger, and whatever else was there, plus the original box). I will also include a 50mm lens that's great for low-light shots (indoors, parties, etc.) I also will include a few filters for it (circular polarize'r, UV, and one or two others, but I don't remember what they are off the top of my head). I'll include the carrying case too if desired, but the front zipper on the accessory pocket is broken.

Any interest? I'm taking my CHL class next month, and would like to get something smaller than my XD (in 1911 form) for my daily carry - at least until I get used to carrying a sidearm ("everyone knows I'm carrying" seems to be a common feeling for newbies from what I've read here an on another site I frequent).

I haven't told my wife I'm doing this yet, but she never liked using my D-SLR - too big and too many buttons.

Oh yeah - I shoot at Magnum in Sanger, and I LOVE IT! Even if it is a bit.... low-dollar.

Thanks LedJedi - I'll try to post pics tonight for everyone to see in case anyone out there is interested. 1911's in general seem to carry hefty price tags - but I'm hoping someone might have one that doesn't get much use, isn't really the prettiest gun in their safe anymore, but would make a reliable carry gun.

I almost traded one of my deer rifles for a Kimber a few months back, but the guy decided to keep his gun. I have so few guns though, I hated to get rid of the rifle anyway so I'd always have a spare if I invited someone on a hunt or trip to the range with me.

I actually have this little gun, but my hands are too big to shoot it, and the slide bites my hand. My dad gave it to me many years ago - he has one just like it. I would include it in the deal if it helps. I know nothing about it, other than it's a Davis Industries .380, and I think they were "affordable"... The only thing is that it has a tiny hairline crack at the base of the slide just under the muzzle. I don't have the skills or tools to weld and fix it, and have it re-chromed, nor could I afford to have a smith fix it. I also have NO IDEA how to take it apart for proper cleaning - as such, it tends to jamb fairly often. I assume a proper cleaning would help with that. It's a fun plinker though.

Not necessarily. You can get a Rock island for $365 at the gun shows in Houston and they are reliable decent 1911's. Spend a little more and you can get a base level Springfield which can be modded to perfection later on. There is also High Standard and Norinco's, both reliable but not tack drivers or expensive.

Lastly, this is the gun that really caught my attention - the Springfield PX9161LP Loaded Ultra Compact - Stainless, but $790 from my FFL is a little steep. What could I start off with (preferably in the Springfield or better) lineup that could be customized down the road to match this model? My primary intention is to get a compact (Ultra-Compact, according to Springfield) 1911 that would be considerably smaller than my XD .40 4" Service model - I would like to carry all of the time, but I just don't see myself carrying my XD on a daily basis - at least, not until I get accustomed to CC.

I hope you got further in your book than I did in mine.... I was looking for a career change, or at least to pick up a new skill set to make myself more marketable. Hard to pick up that sort of stuff on your own though - at least for me anyway...

Very cool stuff! I was hoping to learn it so that I could create asset tracking databases for my wife, and have that database accessible via a web page. I'm more graphics oriented though - this is some of my stuff...

Thats a pretty decent price. I dont think you could get a plain jane stainless ultra for less. If you go to another brand in non stainless you can get the RIA or high Standard in the 3" range for around 500. Those little .45s are expensive.

what's your poison on CMSs man? I'm a joomla freak. I'm more in the designer/UI and Usability interface arena than coding. Programming loops give me headaches. i can never figure out if i should use a Dowhile or Dountil and I'll make nested IFs till i'm blue in the face rather than use a CASE statement. Stuff drives me bonkers.

I love creating online learning and doing light flash stuff though. Adobe Fireworks is king.

I was hoping nobody would point that out; I was just thinking about calling the shop in the morning to see what they had so I could buy something cheap and trade.

I'm more in the market for a Maxxum 5D or 7d or Sony Alpha, though, since I have i-series lenses and flash already for the Maxxum 8000i.

The best 1911 for the money is the Taurus.

The blued ones can be bought for less than $500, while I just bought a stainless for $550.
