New AR15 build complete (pics inside).

Post by G.A. Heath »

I just finished building my new AR15 today, now I need to get the accessories for it. A few weeks ago I assembled my lower. On Saturday I assembled the upper receiver, barrel, handguards, and muzzle device. On Saturday I still needed the sights, charging handle, and complete bolt carrier group.

I had to test fire the rifle so I grabbed my spare 223 bolt (I used it to check head space), a cheap red dot I had laying around, and I pulled the charging handle and bolt carrier group from my first build (I used the "spare" bolt in place of the bolt from my first build). No malfunctions at all in the rifle, even better the other rifle me and my buddy modified (fixed front sight swapped to a flip up unit) had no malfunctions, and my 6.8 that had just made its way back from DPMS had no malfunctions.

Today the brown santa paid me a visit and left me with my bolt carrier group (its bolt is now the spare), flip up sights, and charging handle.
So here's the rifle:

And here is all three of my AR15 rifles:

The top is my first build, the middle is my new (second) build, and the bottom is my DPMS 6.8 problem prone rifle (which ate up the last of my ammo for it without a hickup).

I still need some accessories like a HWS, rail covers, forward pistol grip, ect. so make suggestions and/or tell me about deals that will be available when I am no longer broke in a week or two.

I don't even have one. Great looking guns. :tiphat:

I just finished putting my lower together Monday night. I'm still trying to decide what I want to finish it out with, and will probably do so in the next month. I'm really looking forward to getting it put together.

This is what I learned from my two builds:

* Building a complete upper is more expensive than buying a complete upper (Even if you have all the tools the shipping eats your lunch).
* Building, headspacing, and inspecting an upper with a free float forearm is easier than building and inspecting a lower.
* Having a pile of parts that is almost a complete rifle but still can't be shot is possibly the most annoying thing in the world.
* I will assemble my uppers myself from now on, just the satisfaction of completing the job makes it worth it.
* I have no fears about modifying my 6.8 now that I have assembled an upper.
* My parts cast off box has grown significantly (odds and ends that were included with parts/kits I purchased but didn't need/want).
* Building a rifle is 25% fun, 25% work, and 50% waiting.

Very nice.

What sights did you use, is the front sight a flip up sight?

The sights are both flip-up sights, made by Yankee Hill Machine, as is the free float quad rail and flash suppressor. Good quality parts at a good price. The barrel is a E.R. Shaw 16 inch chrome lined unit with a 5.56 chamber and a 1-9 twist. The upper receiver, BCG, and charging handle are Del-Ton components while the bolt itself is a Bushmaster unit that used to be my spare unit but I wanted it on this gun so the Del-ton bolt is now the spare. I plan to add an EO-Tech 511 to the gun among some other accessories.

There are two different flip-up front sights from YHM, one is intended for a railed gas block while the other is intended for railed hand guards (with the hand guard version being shorter of course).

I figured that one out :banghead: after purchasing the wrong sight. The CMMG has a tall gas block, so it needs a "rail" mount style sight as the gas block version is 1/4" too tall.

How prevalent is the 6.8..do you think it will grow or slowly die as a non-standard round?

Nice AR by the way

If I had the choice I would get a plane jane standard M-16A2 like I carried when I was in the Marines
