There is always some goofball that can't perform the simplest of tasks. These folks are as much a danger at the range as anywhere else.

I'd rather have them "plug" themselves at home...then send them out into public.

I certainly agree that careless folks are a danger on the range, too, but there's often some level of supervision or "peer review" (the alarmed guy in the next lane) that at least provides a chance of catching major errors before they result in disaster.

The bottom line is that Jeff Cooper was right - there's no such thing as a foolproof gun, and his solution is hard to beat: "Fools should keep their hands off machinery."

You can try to make things "Monkey Proof", but it seems they just keep coming up with "Better Monkeys".

How about we just use our heads and assume a gun is always loaded and will fire when ever the trigger is pulled and there will be no room for accidents. Thats the best way to answer these questions.

Whether or not the pistol will fire without a magazine can be a critical piece of knowledge during an encounter that requires a reload. One should know if his weapon is entirely out of action during the reloading process, or if it could still be fired if needed.

Everyone should know with absolute certainty how their weapon will function under these conditions.

so if my gun doesnt have a magazine disconnect
and i put a fully loaded magazine in cock the gun
release the magazine and theres a round chambered
then the gun wont shoot?

Exactly opposite: if it doesn't have a disconnect, then it will shoot with no magazine.

If one didn't come with the gun (perhaps purchased used without the original materials), the manuals for most modern arms are readily available for download online at the manufacturers' web sites.

I removed the extended magazine from my Para, and sure enough.... it fired!
