The M1 Carbine is a fun gun to shoot, but nothing that I would rely on against any serious game (4 or 2 legged). To me, it feels like a .22, and in fact my children shoot it just as easily as they shoot our Marlin youth .22.

You mentioned that you are looking for an SKS or 30.06, etc, so you are clearly looking for something far more potent than the anemic 30 caliber cartridge that the M1 Carbine shoots.

I'd hold out for a buyer on your pistol and get that SKS that you really want. $400 can get you a sweet SKS or even four Mosin-Nagants.

Good call...I've been doing some research on it and it does look a bit weak, but fun to shoot. But then again, any gun is fun to shoot if you think about it. :)
I'm going to pass on his offer.

I'd stay away from Plainfield. If you want a carbine, get a real USGI gun. As for the .30 carbine cartridge doing the job, there are plenty of dead Germans, Italians, Japanese, North Koreans, and North Vietnamese who would attest to its killing power if they could! Don't let numbers and charts fool you.

The M1 carbine using the soft point rounds is a very good brush gun for deer hunting!

Some say it has ballistics almost equivalent to a .357Mag, if you put a .357Mag in a long barrel lever action rifle it "comes alive" and is one heck of a short/med range firearm

I really miss my M1 Carbine...it was one of my most favorite little rifles

But rifles that push heavier bullets faster such as the .30-30, the .308 and the .30-06 make for much better game getters

I just got an M1 Garand from CMP and she is a joy to shoot!

Plainfield is a civilian aftermarket. It was purchased by Ivers Johnson back in the 70s. Ivers Johnson later went out of business. It's an ok rifle that usually sales for between $200 and $275. If I were you I would spend the extra money and get an M1 carbine thru the CMP. You'll be happier owning a real piece of history.

Allow me to add that a USGI rifle will only go up in value. A Plainfield or any other copy has nowhere to go but down.
