Adding to the stream of noob questions...

Post by mr.72 »

I am all set to go buy myself a .22 rifle. I have settled on a Marlin 795SS.

The manual says it has "a grooved receiver designed to handle tip-off-type 22 scope bases. They are made by Tasco, Weaver, and others, and are available through your local gun dealer."

So, exactly what do I need in order to put a scope on this rifle?

I figured I'd just be able to buy a scope and it'd likely come with the required hardware...

Depending on the scope, you may get some standard rings with it that would work, but may have to buy the rings separate. That type of mount is the most common used on rifles, so pretty easy to find them. There is a link to Midway's selection of tip-off scope rings http://www.midwayusa.com/esearch.exe/se ... l_products" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

OK thanks. Sounds like "standard" scope + rings (included in the price range of scopes I am considering) should work.

.22 rifles usually have grooved receivers that take a different mount that 'standard' weaver bases/rings used on centerfire rifles. Most scopes for 22's are the little 3/4" tubes that come with the special rings. There are a few fullsize (1" tube) scopes that come with 22 rings, but most don't. You can buy the rings separately.

here's an example of a standard scope that comes with 22 rings:

another approach is to use these adaptors on the 22, allowing the use of standard rings:

Shall I presume that scopes marketed as "rimfire" scopes are going to mount up correctly?

I guess this is a good reason to buy local... I can just take it back if it doesn't fit.

No! You need to pick your scope first, then find your rings.

Most scopes for rimfires are a 3/4" tube, BUT...you can also get a scope with a 1" or 30mm tube...so the rings will need to correspond.

If you plan on shooting beyond 50 yds. (or in low light conditions) I would strongly suggest getting a quality scope for the rifle (these will normally be a 1" or 30mm tube with a larger objective lens).

All of the scopes I am considering include rings, and are 1" tube.
