South Carolina tax holiday

South Carolina will have no state or local taxes on firearms sales the two days after Thanksgiving.

The tax holiday applies only to modern rifles, handguns, and shotguns. It does not apply to ammunition, shooting accessories, or antique firearms.

The usual feathers are ruffled.

The no-tax is a measurable cost saving. The expressions of outrage on the Brady's priceless.

I'd call it a win-win. The state foregoes a little revenue, but the militia is better equipped.

The only way to make this better would be to combine the "back to school" tax holiday concept we have in Texas with the SC "buy a gun" version. It could be called the "buy your kid a gun" tax holiday. Definitely a win-win...Bradys have a heart attack and more TX kids could get their first .22 under the Christmas tree.

Unfortunately it doesn't get rid of the 11% Federal tax on firearms.

One step at a time.

The federal tax is built into the price of firearms and ammunition. You pay it only once. The state sales tax (8.25% generally) is also charged for sales of used weapons from FFLs, ammunition, and accessories.

I don't suppose we could call it "Don't mess with Texas" day?

Sounds good to me.

Some people might find it provocative. I am cursed with seeing both sides of most issues.
