Apt Maint. snooping around guns
I can't believe I haven't posted this yet. But last night I came home to find a note on my door that maintenance had been in my apt to "put a fire extinguisher under my sink". Fine, what ever. It was there, now I have two fully charged ones. Then when i get up for work this morning and go into my closet I notice my bb gun that had been leaning up against the wall was in the other side laid down flush across my real rifles.
I called in late to work so I could run to home depot to replace the closet door knob with a keyed lock.
I've lived here for quite a while and have never had any such problems. Needless to say I'm going to call and report it tomorrow. I have no direct hard evidence but I suspect if this happened to me there would other reports of "weirdness" as well.

Thats too bad and i would report it also.
On another note, imo you should get yourself a safe. Leaving your guns laying around is a good way to get them stolen by a BG or maintenance.

A safe i have. Hand guns and ammo fit nicely in it. Rifles not so much. I'm waiting until I get a house for a proper sized safe for all arms. I have no kids or children that visit so I thought my means of storage was sufficient.

It is. But only until someone besides you, like maintenance or burglars enter your apartment. Someone knows you have rifles in your closet. I would bet money your closet door is one of those lightweight cheepies. A lock wont stop someone from getting to them. If you want them to be SECURE and not just STORED, get a safe and a couple buddies to help you get it inside, and secure the safe to a wall or floor. Chances are you aint gonna get your deposit back anyway, so dont worry about the holes.atxgun wrote:A safe i have. Hand guns and ammo fit nicely in it. Rifles not so much. Nope, it's not an adimentium steal door with 10 dead bolts. Just a $10 knob with a lock. Anyone sufficiently determined will break through. "They" could even haul off the safe and take as much time as they need to get into it. Security through layers is all I'm saying. Even those joke "locks" that come with many guns say this in their paper work.
Re: Apt Maint. snooping around guns
I had an incident once where maintenance had entered my apt to replace all the electrical outlets. Appearantly they were replacing the outlets in all the units of the complex, yet failed to notify the residents beforehand.
I came home from work one day and discovered both the front door as well as the patio door wide open and all the furniture moved everywhere. I was single at the time and lived alone so I knew something was not right. After making sure no one was in the apartment I was about to call the police when I noticed little bits of wire insulation on the foor below one of the outlets, thats when I realized why everything was moved. The electricians finished their work and picked up the old outlets but didnt finish cleaning up the mess or moving things back.
At this point I was mad as a very warm & unpleasant place (10 yr old edit) and immediately went to the complex manager's office to ask why my doors were left open and my apt was a mess. (My biggest concern was the apt being left unsecured, I had about 8 grand worth of guitars and related gear in my apt) The manager indicated it was somehow my fault and that she would do nothing about it. After speaking to a couple of my neighbors and discovering they had the same thing happen we decided to call the company that actually owned the apt complex. Long story short, about a week later the apt manager was fired and I got a free month's rent.
I would definitely file a complaint with the propertery manager asap, and the property owner if management fails to respond. If this fails to get the issue resolved you can also file a complaint with the Texas Aparment Association .
Its been over 12 years since I moved out of my last apartment and into my own home and I must say, there is no way I would ever move into an apartment again especially because of things like this. I would rather live under a freeway overpass.
I wish you the best of luck with getting this resolved in an expediant manner.

That has got to leave a creepy feeling inside, good luck with your security. I think if I lived somewhere that was open to employees, it would be time for a "nanny" cam. But thats just me.... good luck with this.

Especially now that they know the rifles are there!dihappy wrote:Leaving your guns laying around is a good way to get them stolen by a BG or maintenance.

I thought they had to give advance notice unless there was an emergency. If that's true I think you should file a complaint with the appropriate authorities, whether that's the property owner or the police.
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

If it was mentioned, I missed it...sorry.
If you haven't got it, go tomorrow and take out tenant/renter's insurance imediately. You can't afford not to be covered from fire, theft, water or whatever if you have anything of value in your apartment. Tenant's insurance is very affordable.

Re: Apt Maint. snooping around guns
I've had renters insurance for quite some time. I learned my lesson years ago in college when my apartment got robbed. The think that irritated me off the most was my computer. So many files that could not be replaced.
At least the guy was dumb enough to use his real ID when he pawned my bike so at least I got that back and he got some jail time.

I'll reread my lease but I'm was not under that impression and IANAL.Bart wrote:I thought they had to give advance notice unless there was an emergency. If that's true I think you should file a complaint with the appropriate authorities, whether that's the property owner or the police.
Re: Apt Maint. snooping around guns
I think a stranger snooping around my apartment would upset me enough to move out.
I hope nothing is missing and you can secure your residence from additional intrusions.

Re: Apt Maint. snooping around guns
Believe me, I hate it when ever I get a notice that maint will be in my apt the following day for what ever reason. I don't like people up in my stuff. So coming home to find a notice of an unannounced visit irked me in of itself. Nothing was missing, just this rearrangement i noticed that would not be possible by something just falling over. So either I was sleep walking (which i don't do), or it was a ghost (which I don't believe in) or this.
I was so caught up with work today I forgot to call until after they were closed. Oh well better I can go in person tomorrow.
Of the staff I know they are all very nice and (seemingly?) respectable.
I've been meaning to get a house about a year and a half ago and then you saw what happened, so I freaked out and remained renting.
God I can't wait to have a place I can actually say is my own and no one else has any legal right to enter.
