Posting that says it is a gun free zone?

Post by CC Italian »

I know if it is the 30.06 or the 50% sign we can't enter the building but I saw a new sign and I want to see if any of you have seen or heard of it before. It is at a school that is why I ask. This sign is located at a high school were I sometimes drop of my girlfriends little brother in the morning. It is posted as soon as you pull into the parking lot. I will paraphrase it the best I can.

"This premise is a gun free zone; all violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of federal and state laws". It also has a handgun with a circle slash through it. I have never seen a sign like this at a school before you pull into the parking lot. I know we can't bring it into the school but I know we can have it in our cars in the parking lot. I know one of the teachers at another school in the district and see said all cars are subject to inspection in the parking lot and teachers are not allowed to have firearms anywhere on the premises, even in their cars. She said it is in their contract. Does this affect a CC holder? I assume not but what do you guys think?

Next time I go I will get a picture? Thanks

One more thing, the teacher told me that they use gun sniffing dogs around the cars? I have never heard of this. This is a public school not a private.

That sign refers to the federal "gun free school zone" law. It is not applicable to CHL holders.

The "gun- and drug-sniffing dogs" can be a problem. I don't have a good answer for that. Check out this thread: http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... =7&t=22639" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I am not a lawyer and this should not be considered legal advice.

if true, I really hope nobody gets the idea that sprinking some gunpowder on cars belonging to administrators & others (principal, vice-principal, nurse, guidance counselors, the school safety officer, etc.) would be a good idea. :evil2:

Many public schools use a security guard company with dogs trained to sniff out guns, drugs, and tobacco. It might cause some problems for the employees or students, but it is certainly not a worry for a criminal trial. Too many loopholes in the search/seizure/chain of custody process to make a good case. School officials used to hate when we told them that.

Sorry if I am hijacking, but I've also been wondering about a similar thing with public schools. It sounds like a CHL is fine to drive by, and park at, a school, and have/leave the gun in the car. But what if I'm just walking by the school? Is there a certain distance from the edge of the property that I have to maintain?

A CHL holder can walk around on school grounds armed, as long as no school-sponsored event is taking place outdoors. You can't legally enter the buildings without permission (as if that ever happens).

I saw the same sign on one of those 24-hour Emergency Clinics. Didn't stop me from entering.

Wanting to make sure, it's 51% not 50%, right?

Saw a Gun Free Zone sign today at a School. Beside the picture it said permitted or non-permitted. I assume this is also not a valid sign.

The only valid sign for CHL holders in Texas is a 30.06 sign.

The places that are off-limits by statute do not require signs: school buildings, courthouses, jails, bars, etc.

Municipalities sometimes post 30.06 signs on these places to prevent CHL holders from accidentally entering them.

Bars are a special case. They are supposed to post a 51% sign, but they are still off-limits if they don't post the sign. (This point has been discussed hundreds of times on this forum.)

Of course, most federal facilities are off-limits. They may or may not post signs.
