Texas Open Carry – Positive
PLEASE NOTE: This thread is intended for those who support open-carry in Texas. For those opposed to open-carry in Texas please see the thread “Texas Open Carry – Negative”. Thank you.
In light of the recent poll in this forum regarding support for open-carry in Texas which showed a greater than 80% favorable response to some form of open-carry I would like to start this thread to request suggestions on how we move forward with open-carry in Texas to prepare for the 2011 session. We obviously need the support of TSRA and the NRA so I would like to hear your suggestions on how to get this 2A freedom restoration item enjoyed by over 75% of the US population as a sanctioned TSRA legislative project for the 2011 legislative session. PLEASE keep your responses positive and forward looking.
Thanks and Have a Nice Day,

Every effort has its Rush Limbaugh's and its Nancy Pelosi's. Get rid of the unilateral firebrands and hot heads on both sides and let the reasonable moderates work together toward the bilateral passage of a mutually beneficial common goal.

Start dialogue with TSRA and ask them what the best approach might be. Seek their guidance, as they are more familiar with the intricacies of how the legal system in Texas flows and goes. They have a good finger on the pulse of things here and are very capable. Approached as an ali, with an ali's spirit, things can go far. It may be necessary to eat a little humble pie to get things started.

I would say that both Limbaugh and Pelosi have been very effective at achieving their goals and furthering their causes. I'm afraid that the open carry folks have not only not achieved anything, they have set the cause back. It wasn't the passion that killed Open Carry bill , rather it was the my way or the highway attitude that killed the bill.Oldgringo wrote:Every effort has its Rush Limbaugh's and its Nancy Pelosi's. There are some folks here that I've heard speak on gun rights and affecting changing laws . They are firebrands, buy every definition. The difference is they ignore the enemy, make alliances with like minded folks and reason with those who just might understand. The meek might inherit the earth but they will never get a bill passed and into law.

Re: Texas Open Carry – Positive
The only thing Moderates have given us is watered down PRIVILAGES. This, at least to me, can no longer be looked on as an issue that any moderate can understand properly. There is no place for compromise because every civil right that is compromised is not a civil right. This is not an issue any government has any power to regulate. No law abiding person can be restricted on their right to at least keep and bear common firearms. I am saddened that the Power Structure of this state still wants to hang on to its self-appointed power to regulate our Second Amendment rights. God (Nature for some of you) gave me the right to keep and bear arms and every restriction on that is a criminal if not sinful act as long as I remain law abiding. The worries of these "experienced cowards" seem to come from the misuse or accident rate of unlicensed OC. Well, we have two years to educate the general public about safety as well as law. Where are our leaders organizing to disseminate that information to every law abiding Texan 19 and over? I understand those who fear for safety reasons but do not understand the elitists attitudes of those who demand government control over a right. Free people take care of their own safety and private industry can step in and provide proper education without government. Are we so addicted to control that we cannot even practice our freedoms without an okay? I have the faith in the American people that our founding fathers had. They recognized that every person, even more than I propose, has the right to bear arms. I measure my elected servants by that standard and that is why I am passionate and perhaps seem insulting to some on the other side of this issue. I do not mean insult at all. I only ask we all recognize this issue is the one that can turn our state from accepting government control to standing up as free people. We need no government if we regulate ourselves and insist every person do the same.

Thanks for the replys. Please keep the suggestions coming on how we go forward with restoring the 2A freedom. Once we gather sufficient (definition TBD) feedback I will try to consolidate and make a proposition for your review and comment.

We didn't go from slavery to freedom for Black folks in a single day. Slavery was wrong, and we had to work our way out of it incrementally. It'll be the same here.

All rights have limits. What happens when every store, every private location bans firearms? The both your OC rights and CHL rights are out the window. Franky I'd ban firearms from my property at that point. An all or nothing approach will lead to just that...nothing.Captain Matt wrote:"shall not be infringed"

Nope, its a discussion of the effect of this. As its being debated on the negative thread, so also on the positive.roberts wrote:Was that a positive comment?frazzled wrote:Franky I'd ban firearms from my property at that point.

Re: Texas Open Carry – Positive
Actually, slavery did end in one day when the South surrendered.
And if we accept privileges as a destination we will never reach that destination. Once a government takes power it will not release that power short of either a Supreme Court decision that forces them to or revolution that does away with all government power.
Also, to argue that CHL will be negatively affected from the acceptance of unlicensed open carry is just false. The law that opens the state up to OC would be totally separate from the CHL laws. And if a business owner posts their property with 30.06 it wouldn't be binding on OC anyway. I think it is nothing more than fear that compels some opponents to OC just like it is and was fear that compelled people from not wanting CHL. The states that do not regulate or loosely regulate OC do not have problems with it in any amount that would cause them to do away with it. And I will be so bold as to write that unlicensed OC will come to Texas. Maybe it will take a decade or two but it will pass. I base that on the national movement to apply the 14th Amendment to the States as well as that time eases the concerns of the general population. Also, I will not stop supporting it until we get it because that is our civil right.
That said, as long as I can afford a CHL I will have one. I will not OC in cities or highly populated areas because I want the advantage of surprise. However, sometimes I just want to be able to exercise my rights and I want my kids to have the option that freedom allows.
